I get my HMRC code and PAYE tax status every year , audited by said HMRC .

Cannot afford to pay a very clever Auditor or IFA to cook my books , he can .

Another example of how money talks in very high places .
Rest of us pay our tax bill honestly , others laugh .

Well done the HMRC, I suspect there’s plenty more like him out there.

Just goes to show the madness of Cameron and Osborne when they cut the HMRC budget as part of the austerity programme back in the early 2010’s, they should have increased the number of tax inspectors, introduced some performance related pay and gone after the tax evaders. It would have paid for itself.

Pity that is not true HMRC jobs cuts were made in 2006 and a further 12000 jobs were cut between 2008 and 2010 all under Brown and Blair. Since then in 2012 HMRC Scotland was formed to collect devolved taxes in Scotland and in 2013 HMRC Wales was formed to collect devolved taxes in Wales.

Since 2010 neatly tax returns from self employed and those outside the Paye system have gradually gone online and 99% are now completed online automatically. This is of course more efficient and less labour intensive. The staff have been transferred from manually checking these returns onto tax investigations , avoidance and evasion departments.

Brown and Blair did cut HMRC staff, but they were further cut by a further 10% by Cameron and Osborne in the early to mid 2010’s. Numerous tax offices were also closed and regional hubs were created. The service we get now is worse than ever.

Last year 10m calls which is almost 25% of the calls to HMRC went unanswered. Wait times are now higher than ever averaging between 13 and 18 mins. In January this year the Public Accounts Committee reported HMRC was missing out having failed to collect around £42bn in tax revenue in 21/22 because of a “failure to better resource compliance”.

We’ve also lost a shed full to Covid fraud which Sunak isn’t interested in going after - that’s around another £5bn.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to the HMRC staff who currently oversee the Tax Credit system when responsibility for that passes over to DWP as part of the transition to Universal Credit.

There's going to be thousands of people needing redeployment.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

I waited 45 minutes a few months ago and they weren't much help, I've gone to one of those tax reclaim companies now and they reckon I'm owed nearly 7k, I did say reckon, probably half of that is more accurate.

During the COVID crisis had to get in touch with HMRC over an existing Pension Plan I had added to a part time job I had taken up .

Got through in the end , my tax code had not been updated in the confusion .

Found out later most ot the staff were working from home then , most unsupervised or their work double checked by colleagues .

On advice , pushed for a recalculation and was overcharged in tax , then refunded £ 700 .

Excuse was Human Error brought on by that particular time , we all make mistakes .
Accept that answer , it happens .

Just hope whoever it was who done the sums did not screw up a necessary payment to somebody in need .

I now check my Tax Code on a regular basis .
