U21 v Brighton away tonight : Premier League Cup 13:19 - Jan 23 with 2626 viewsKeithHaynes

Previous meeting saw the Swans win 3-1 last October thanks to goals from the absent Kristian Fletcher. Big miss.

OS
Swansea City Under-21s return to Premier League Cup action as they travel to the south-east to take on Brighton & Hove Albion in their penultimate group stage fixture tonight (7.30pm).

The Swans only require a point to progress to the last 16, as they currently sit second in Group A on nine points, one behind their Aston Villa counterparts at the top of the standings.

In their previous fixtures, the development side recorded wins over Hull City (home and away) and Brighton, but suffered heartbreak against Aston Villa as Kobei Moore netted deep into stoppage time to deny the Swans a point in a 4-3 defeat.

The Seagulls are unbeaten in their last five fixtures in all competitions, with their most recent victory coming against Dinamo Zagreb in the Premier League International Cup.

Pre-match views

Coach Anthony Wright: "We'll dust ourselves down from the disappointment in the Nathaniel MG Cup final, and we can go again in this competition.

"We've put ourselves in a good position to qualify for the next round, I believe we only need a point to go through and, hopefully, we can secure that in Brighton on Tuesday evening."

Sent to Swansea to assess him. The manager saifd he was on trial which is good enough for me. 17 goals in a spell that was extraordinary and the coaching staff had nothing good to say about the bloke. Remember he was 18 and playing at u21 level not u18.

Duff stated discussions would be held at the end of his loan. Fletcher then disappeared.

Is the culture at the club toxic?. A touch of "This guy is too good for us". No one was too good for Laudrup. "Sorry Michu you should go to Arsenal not come here".

I do not want to criticise journalists but there is something not quite right here. An explanation is required.

Players like Fletcher are extremely rare.

Fletcher was not on trial. Levien loaned him to the youth group during their off season and said himself he would be back at DC United. Levien wants him there rather than here for two reasons:

1) Big money sale to fund the likes of Benteke on £60-£70k per week
2) MLS squads benefit from home grown players in a couple of ways including budgets

a) Fletcher sees his future in UK / Europe not USA
b) Fletcher wanted to stay (WoL)
c) Duff said he was on trial (press conference)
d) Duff said "we" have a decision to make in January. (Coleman and Watson not Levien).
e) Fletcher failed to get a deal at Swansea and Levien took him back.
f) Fletcher's goal scoring was exceptional far better than any local player.
g) No Swansea coach ever praised the player.

Swansea do not like goal scoring centre forwards. Goykeres and Whitaker were unloved at Swansea. So was Georgio Chinaglia.

Wise sage since Toshack era

Good post spoiled by a ridiculous last point. Charles, Latchford, Waddle, McCarthy, Thomas, Trundle, Scotland, Graham, Bony , Llorente, McBurnie, Piroe and so on - unloved?? Give over.

Except that Fletcher was never on trial.
