Kicks off next month with the news that Cummins is likely out of the first test and possibly most/all of the series. That helps.

We keep saying they should so all these things, but we know that they won't.

Only upside of all this is assuming we lose the series (badly?) then heads will roll and maybe we'll have a new setup that takes red ball cricket seriously again.

'Take Red Ball Cricket seriously again'

Chef I don't expect to have to tell you again... Stop being silly!! Don't let me have to tell you again

I don't get what Jamie Smith offers. That was a poor drop of Head when he was on 3 and batting-wise he looks very naive and scared when he comes to the crease. Mind you they all look scared facing Starc!

I was a big fan of Smith but recently (and in particular this series so far) he has failed to impress for sure

There’s lots of things we *should* do… Margot Robbie *should* ditch her husband and marry me instead but here we are.

In reality they’ll stall until twilight, put us in and have us 6/7 down by close.

I mean, let’s be honest, Margot Robbie probably *shouldn’t* do that.

Bowled too short too. And the other reason they scored so many runs in that rgeion was Stokes’ a refusal to put a 3rd man in for most of the innings. It was infuriating. If the bowlers are struggling to pitch it up successfully, then out a 3rd man. Free runs every over.

Fundamentally, this England team looks undercooked. They don’t look like they have played much cricket recently. 9 ducks in 3 innings. Dropped catches. Bowlers 5mph down on pace from the first innings they bowled. It all screams they are short of cricket. Funny that.

The problem with this England set up is that it doesn’t seem to accept it could be wrong (as well as the lack of accountability stuff I posted on this thread the other day).

England have to bowl them out for around 400 tomorrow, and then gain parity no more than 1 or 2 down. And then they need to grit out the 3rd session. If they lose wickets in that session wafting away, they deserve all the criticism they will get. If they show some resilience with the bat tomorrow, they could finish the day around 120 ahead, hopefully for the lose of only 3, maybe.

If they can bat the two sessions on the 4th day, they’ll have a 300+ lead, AND Aus beginning their innings under lights with a new ball, which puts them in the box seat (shame we have no spinner for day 5).

However that whole strategy relies on batting time. These day night tests are all about how you manage time so you’re bowling and batting at the opportune times. It requires brains.

Dream on!

If she can bowl or bat, the selectors should most likely contract her before she should call you…

M Robbie, left arm, China-woman - from the pavilion end.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

There are batsmen in our team that have either not made the step up as expected or are incredibly inconsistent.

Crawley, Pope, Stokes would place these three in the inconsistent pile. On their day, brilliant but too often out for low scores.

Brook, Jacks, Smith in the not there yet for me.

Surprised Jacks selected here. He is a one day player. Hardly played any county games in last two seasons. Smith is another really who is a one day player.

Brook just plays every ball like he must make a boundary. Quelle surprise he then makes mistakes !!!

You know with central contracts now I'm just not sure our cricketers play enough red ball cricket. They just don't spend any time in the middle.

Yes, back in the day, playing 16/17 (after Durham got first class status) first class county games plus B&H, NatWest, Sunday league games alongside playing test matches and ODIs was far too much cricket.

It's now gone completely the other way playing virtually nothing at all in-between test matches. There needs to be a happy medium.
