Getting an existential sense of dread at the forthcoming annointment of someone apparently desperate to depict himself as the fourth Gallagher brother to the highest office in the land.
Those of us with long memories will recall how monumentally useless he was as part of the late Labour Government. His ineptitude as Secretary of Health gave him the nickname of "Bodybags". His rejection by his own party in 2015 and then the electorate in 2017.
To see him swept into power when things are already shit doesn't do much for my optimism levels. As bad as things have been under Labour, the capacity is there for it to get much, much worse. [Post edited 4 Jul 20:05]

I don't know how accurate this is but I read that fewer than 2% of UK pensioners reach retirement age without contributing to the State Pension system in some way. The State Pension requires a minimum of 10 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions or credits to receive any payout, and nearly all retirees meet this minimum threshold. As the good Dr says, "credits" which means they didn't pay in.
I don't know what we, as a society, would do if someone hit pension age and they got zero because they didn't pay anything in. Maybe it would focus people on paying in |  |

I was an 18 yr old apprentice working for a two man band one was a close family friend, all I had was statutory sick pay.
That's all I get now as well, was off 3 days last week after dental work and a fortnight earlier in the year when I was off with flu and when my knee was knackered a few years ago.
Only time I had sick pay was when I worked for one of the big companies.
nothing until then and nothing for last 4yrs, did have my own insurance at one point to cover my mortgage, long time ago that was though. | | | |

Only ever had benefit of paid sick pay for 6yrs of my 49yrs of working, great pension as well, took enhanced redundancy when it was offered after they sold their retail business off. | | | |

I’ve always been fortunate to work since 15 years old and with a private pension as part of the package so we’re ok , not rich but atm ok . I can’t imagine having to live just on the state pension but many have to and that will become the norm as the good paying employers no longer exist in this part of the world. When you consider how many big companies the areas lost we now have a generation who will never know job security as us oldies would have. | |

I've been lucky these last 10yrs to be honest, my eldest has worked hard academically and it's got him a good well paid job, he's 33 later this month and has had two well paid jobs.
