This isn't my area of expertise so I may well be wrong but my understaing is trees planted near the equator are far more effective at capturing carbon that they would be in wales.
Here's a two minute explanation, I hold an Environmental Biology degree and spent 10 years working the discipline so have an understanding if a bit out of date! As a very, very rough rule of thumb temperate forests store about 3 times the amount of carbon as a tropical forest.
In terms of biodiversity, some quick research will reveal the problem we have in the UK. The simplest example I use is that of driving late into a summer evening. 30 years ago car windscreens would be plastered with insects after a late evening drive., now very little accumulates in the same circumstances. Why does this matter, insects are the powerhouse in most ecosystems as pollinators and as a vital part of the food chain.

Trees such as balsa can live for only 10 to 40 years in tropical climates, depending on the conditions, so it's temping to grow these and harvest the wood. The Mbale Project that the Senedd contributes to is an agroforestry initiative, rather than a tropical rainforest project, that includes beekeeping, fodder, and firewood.
