Half the away end was empty, the north West corner wasn't even sold. The edge of the north East was not sold out. Thats without single seats scattered throughout the ground. Why do you think the club would not give the correct figure, these are not Vetch field days.

Maybe Dougie Sharpe , God bless him, was floating about, and the crowd got reduced.
I would say there were about 2000 empty seats in the North and North West, and about 300 empty in the South West corner. Quite a few empties in the South too, 500 or so.
But 18,500 would have been about it. |  |

Funny really. I can remember going to an FA Cup game against Oxford down the Vetch in ‘92 I think it was. Looking at the attendance in the evening post the next day it said it was something like 5,500 there, & I thought that was a big crowd at the time.., which I suppose it was really, as I think we averaged about 3,500 at that time if memory serves. Funny how it’s all changed from those days. |  | | |

Easily 2000+ seats empty in the North and North West corner. Another thousand or so dotted about the place that you don't notice because they're mostly single seats. There were at least a dozen within 10 yards of me in the East.
High 17,000's seemed about right to me. |  |

The one at the Vetch which still stands out for me was the Soton game in 1982 when Kevin Keegan (RIP) was with them.
I remember getting there about 45 minutes before KO (evening game) and having to struggle to get up the ramp onto the NB which was already rammed. There wasn’t a space in the ground and when they read the attendance out it was received with a massive laugh all around.
The place held just over 26000 at the time and the tannoy announcer goes “tonight’s attendance is 17865” (or thereabouts)!
I still reckon there were over 30000 in there that night. |  | | |
