I'm reading "politics on the edge" by Rory Stewart at the the moment, admittedly an anti Cameron Europhile but according to him, the referendum was only included in the Tory manifesto to appease a handful of old thatcherite MPs.
It was far too important a decision to be left to a binary decision in a referendum, especially given the nonsense and media that surrounded it.
Cameron has a lot to answer for, Brexit was just the mid point. |
Stewart was quite a minor insignificant back bencher at the time. I’m not sure how involved he would have been with the manifesto considering he didn’t get any kind of meaningful role until Theresa May was in the hot seat.
It’s far more likely that the promise of a referendum was included as an attempt to keep hold of votes following UKIP’s win in the European election of 2014. |  |

Iceland’s situation isn’t particularly comparable to Brexit.
They’re already part of the EEA with access to the single market, they’re part of the schengan agreement so there’s free movement, and they’re subject to a pretty large % of EU law.

I’m not sure the UK would go for that sort of deal. Of course some were concerned about the shifting of poliral power but most we worried about immigration.
Any deal that has free movement will be a difficult sell to those who see everything a through the prism of immigration. | | | |

I don’t think it really matters.
They’ve accepted freedom of movement to enable frictionless trade. About 75% of their laws align with the EU.
As for the 52% vote, we know that anything that close causes issues down the line. | | | |
