| The BIG questions 11:10 - Jan 17 with 380 views | Catullus | Taken from the tv show and something said by Lord Sumption, the question asked by the show is...Are we punishing too many for the greater good but then he said that "All lives are not of equal value" and he justified it by saying that his own life was not as valuable as his childrens or grandchildrens lives. So the question is, Are all lives of equal value? | |

| The BIG questions on 13:07 - Jan 17 with 323 views | Joe_bradshaw | It's ok for him to judge his own life as less important than his grandchildren and many of us would take a similar view. It's difficult for society to have an official view though and potentially leads us into choppy waters. We do it to some degree with things like DNR which is acceptable though not to everyone. Is the life of a physically and mentally damaged child less important than an able bodied One? | |

Your point about society, I think, is the important one. Any decent parent would sacrifice themselves to save their kids..and their grandkids, if they had to. By that I mean, if a speeding car was about to hit and you could save yourself or your kid, you'd push your kid to safety and take the hit. So we do value our children (or we should) more highly than ourselves. It doesn't mean we have to condemn the elderly as seemed to happe a bit with Brexit and then some younger people were apparently happy to say with Covid it was only the old and sick who were dying so who cared. The point was made ( it was said on here a few times and I tended to agree ) that if we had made the elderly and those most at risk shield, the rest of the world could have pretty much carried on, that was Lord Sumptions point of view. It was he that said that younger lives were more valuable than old lives. It is a very convoluted situation though with no easy answer. As you say, choppy waters. | |
