Ummm, that's a bit strange! If a book is good I will carry on reading however long it is. It could be a short story, a work of fiction or an historically factual book, if it is bad I will put it down, if it is good I will finish it. The length of the book is irrelevant.

Cat. Thanks. I’m not saying it is about length per se. Look at what I posted again . The Ragged trousered is long and a must read for me

You said "life is too short to read it all the way through to the end" Sorry but if it's not about length per se you will have to explain cos I'm not the brightest!

Oh Jeez. Cat. I’m under attack from the PS massive. Ray or has been awoken from his torpor and Paul and Steve in full hate mood. I was pretty happy last night. Less so now. Please tell me they do not represent your average Jack and by that Inmean Swansea person. As for the book...a good book is one which interests you. It matters not how revered the book is if it does not enthrall or hold attention. Ulysses ,a great book,a famous one ,is one many give up on well before the end. I’m reading How to win friends and influence ,again. Not brilliantly classical but a book to read again and again because it is about human nature, the most interesting thing if all.It s why we act as we do.

Well written, surely that is down to an individuals taste. I read historical fiction, I like Simon Scarrow and Gordon Doherty, Adam Haviaras, a few others because I like their style. There are other just as well known (or even better known) authors I don't read because I don't get on with their style. I've never tried reading Ulysses. Maybe I should so I can see if it is indeed too long! As for your first 2 paragraphs, remember your own words, there are good and bad everywhere but also, even if a person is basically good is doesn't mean you will get on with them and may even argue. What to do in that event is your choice, keep up with the argument or walk away. Personally I think life is too short to keep on arguing (when it's turned nasty) and prefer to walk away. I've had enough arguments.

| What make a good Book on 12:07 - Jan 17 with 310 views | Professor | A good question. Not a great reader of fiction. I guess of fiction then American literature has produced books I have enjoyed or had most impact on me. They would be predictably Harper Lee’s ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’ both easy reads and less easy Donna Tartt’s’ a Secret History’. I like music biographies. Enjoyed Peter Hook’s trilogy on Joy Division, New Order and the Hacienda. Hilarious and sad. Robert Forster’s ‘Grant and I’ beautifully written book about the ‘Go Betweens’. I enjoy Stuart Maconie’s books which have a gentle humour, though based around fact. His description of Slade made me fall off a chair. I also enjoy David Hepworth’s books. Perhaps the most important for me was a little book called ‘ A Genetic Switch’ by a scientist called Mark Ptashne. The original edition was less than fifty pages. It’s not a text book but more the story of lambda bacteriophage ( a virus that infects E. coli bacteria) which has a molecular switch that allows it change between killing the host or incorporation of its genome into the host. Up to that point I did not get molecular biology -an area crucial to modern biology. I read it one sunny late September afternoon in 1989. Was like a fog lifting. That, and good advice from the late Maurice Wilkins, changed how I thought about science | | | |

Thanks Paul.you always stick to topic. I too am nit really a fiction freak preferring to read about actual people and events. I like the long Max Hastings history books . They inform and interest. Whether they are great is not for me to judge

I read his Vietnam War book a year or so ago. Tremendous detail but a little too drawn out in length for me

I mostly read fiction as an escape, I also like Bill Bryson and Terry Pratchett though I've watched Pretchett more than read. I have read and will again read books about real people and real events. I have on my bookshelf waiting for me to get around to them "10 years in Afghanistan" "The Silver Spitfire" and "The last Torpedo Flyers" in my eyes reading about war and what real people went through gives you very good reasons to do your very best to avoid wars! I also had a book by Mary Beard about Rome, I was halfway through it when we mived house and now I can't find it. Most of what I read, fact or fiction, is historical. I have considered going back to school, so to speak and think if I did it would be to study history. Studying the past tells us a great deal about who we are today. Now OHL, one last thing, the only thing for you to judge is whether you liked and enjoyed the book or not. Whether they are great books I don't think any individual can judge, I think that comes down to how many people love the book, or hate it. A truly great book will be universally loved and praised.

But surely a good topic for a south Wirral dinner party. Try Hastings Catastrophe on WW1. I blame Lohengrin
