Bloody hell they look like they are all five !

Swansea City has signed eight players to academy scholarships ahead of the upcoming season, as well as making additions to the club’s professional ranks.

Winger Kyrell Wilson, centre-back David Roberts, versatile defender Filip Lissah and left-back Zane Myers have all joined from Chelsea, while Richard Faakye (Crystal Palace), who can play in central roles in defence and midfield, centre midfielder Charlie Veevers (Manchester United), forward Kieran Petrie (Arsenal) and goalkeeper Ben Hughes (Chippenham Town) have also become Swans scholars.

Geoff Bony, Josh Carey, Joel Cotterill, Ben Lloyd, Jada Mawongo and Evan Watts are also making the step up as scholars having come through the academy ranks.

The new scholars will link up with the under-18s squad under coach Byron Anthony.

Defender Scott Butler and forward Michael Murphy have signed their first professional deals after impressing during their respective scholarships. They join fellow youngsters Josh Thomas and Lincoln McFayden in signing pro deals, with the pair having penned contracts in the second half of last season.

Jacob Jones and Jamie Searle — who is currently away with New Zealand at the Summer Olympics - have also signed new contracts.

The Swans have added goalkeeper Nico Defreitas-Hansen, midfielder Azeem Abdulai and forward Tarrelle Whittaker to the under-23 squad as they arrive after time on the books with Everton, Leicester and Tottenham.

Centre-backs Ben Margetson and Ben Erickson have also signed. Margetson arrives on the back of an impressive trial at the end of last season, while Erickson rejoins after a spell away from the club.

Midfielder Sam Leverett has also joined the Swans after leaving Leeds United.

Has the strategy changed such that the local boys who have been to the club from the age of 9 are moved on earlier.

After the golden group moved on featuring Mcburnie, James, Gorre, Rodon ,Benda, Byers, there was a slump and players were kept on until their 20s with few if any becming pros. Joe Lewis being one.

It appears if you are not expected to kick on at 18 you can expect to be replaced by imports with bigger potential. Moti and kenko gone at 18 whereas Kieran Evans was playing at 21 years. Mason Jones thomas similarly. He is with Penybont in the LoW. One would think some of these players would walk into LoW teams

I think it is more of a case that we just didnt have enough players, Jasper has highlighted that a number of the u16s were pushed up into the u23s .

Its the Cymru Premier.
Not League of Wales.

Most of the players have been released from somewhere or other.
Facilities are much better now.

Your golden group only has Rodon as an ‘age of 9’ Swans player.

By bringing in 5 Chelsea players at youth level, then perhaps our 9 to 16 investment is a waste of time and effort …?
Also we cannot afford to do this any more.

I really do not understand your beef with the Swansea academy. Huw Jenkins and others brought this academy to being and it has paid for itsef in spades especially recently. If the talent is in Swansea SCFC will give it the best opportunity to suceed.

If the local talent is not up to the required standard outside prospects will be brought in. Although it is great providing a pathway for young kids to the first team SCSFC is not a charitible service for Swansea Council. There is an indication that Swanseas and south Wales can produce quality footballers.

The US people are contiinuing to invest in the academy with a high profile chief with good conncetions. It however has to contiue to deliver.

One conern is Connor Roberts. I like to think he will not simply use the club to get fit and walk away on a free at the end of the season. In general players coming through the ranks respect the needs of the club.

You I suggest are not qualified to tell the world what the club can and cannot afford. It cannot affford to have an acedmy that does not provide first team players. It is up to Cullen Garrick , Benda, Brandon Cooper, Ollie Cooper and Dan Williams to press on. The club believes they can afford it. It costs about the same as one low level signing like Barrie Mckay per year.

Not sure how many of the in-house scholars have been with us since 9 years old. Ben Lloyd was at Cardiff until ~u13s, chose to leave. Cotterill almost signed for Cardiff as well, supposedly. Jada Mawongo joined at u13s level. Geoffroy would have been 8 or 9 when his dad signed for us at least.

I think the balance seems right this year. We've got great prospects in centre midfield and have brought in 1 player in that area, but we were light in defence so in come 4.

d) He has engaged in a minimum of five years education under the age of 18 within the territory of the relevant association."

A player with a UK passport/nationality can choose to play for Wales if they moved here before they turned 13 and stayed for 5 years of schooling. It's how Sterling qualifies for England.
