Quote "A breakthrough in the efficiency of this solar cell — which involves tiny crystals containing silver and bismuth metal — means it is now on the brink of being commercially viable to manufacture. "

OK.

I hope this goes ahead as it would revolutionise the planet. Energy poverty could be banished to the past. This is the kind of industry the government should nationalise and keep manufacturing costs low.

I don't think so.
"The developers hope they can double the efficiency within five years, making it comparable with the most efficient solar panels currently available.

And while they concede they may not achieve this goal they are confident that, even with much smaller improvements, the cells will be commercially available within a decade."

They cannot match current solar panels, which take up a lot of area, so these would need to take up a lot more.
It sounds like a dream at the moment, it has to be financially viable to make any sense.
Thin Film solar panels are already available.

This from the article is a direct lie.
"As well as converting natural sunlight into electricity, this new kind of solar cell can harvest artificial light from lightbulbs and use it to generate power indoors. This is something that conventional solar panels can’t do, which require natural light."
Solar cells work indoors using artificial lights and have been used on Calculators for decades.
They are just not as efficient at converting it as they are for sunlight.

I have often wondered why solar cells are not used more often indoors as the light from light bulbs is wasted once it hits a surface.

Once it is Nationalised production will stagnate due to lack of investment and innovation cost will spiral not helped by chronic over manning the fate of all nationalised industries .
Another failed socialist idea.

Or just keep it as private industry and watch the prices go up and up with no reinvestment. Continue with eat or heat fuel poverty for elderly and struggling families. It’s your kind of attitude that has us at the mercy of the energy cartels who far from trying to out compete each other in a traditional market just join forces to ensure they all keep prices high.

Your short sightedness and cap doffing to the criminals that run this country shows you up as the traitor as you are to its own people.

Best still the Eton boys you love so much regard you nothing more as a bit of dirt on their shoes.

Cynic

If this is as revolutionary and efficient as they say it should be nationalised because this would get marketed across the world. Keep the etch British, don't let private investors get their hands on it because, while they would undoubtedly invest, they would also hike prices and make massive profits.

Why shouldn't the UK have something that makes massive profits?

The unions don't have so much power these days, many people don't bother joining. That can have its drawbacks for the workers but a modern nationalised company doesn't have to end up like the miners. The government would be silly not to invest enough if this tech proves as good as they hope, it could make this country many billions AND provide a surge in eco friendly electricity supply, it could take it to a level that's currently impossible because we could put these cells literally everywhere. On our roof and walls, even on our windows. On cars and trains.
Imagine the Liberty covered with these cells. The problem, I would guess, is getting the raw materials to make them, there is a finite supply of metals, how easy is it to get Bismuth? It is apparently as abundant as Silver but how much do these cells need and there would be a massive, enormous number being made.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?
