We knew it was there somewhere and have spent an awful lot of money to get pictures of something we won't touch, that wont help us scientifically and we won't learn anything from. Haven't we got more important things to spend money on?

I think that’s a fake picture. Clearly an Indesit mark 4 washing machine at the back of that picture 👠

I had to get rid of it somewhere, the local tip wouldn't take it during covid.

It is an incredible story but t was very well documented, remarkable in itself is the (restored) film of the ship stuck in ice, the crew still working on it as it started to settle and sink. I still don't see the point in spending a huge sum of money on something that we will learn nothing from.

I know what you mean about money, but I love things like this. You done the Mary Rose ? Well worth a visit if you haven't, along with HMS Victory and HMS Warrior, all within a few hundred yards. There was an American nuclear sub in Port when I was there, now there's a sinister looking vessel

I love History and yes, I've been on the Victory, HMS Belfast and others but they weren't found on the seabed at incredible cost and left there with us only seeing a few pictures. The Mary Rose was raised and we learnt things from that, I think. So what was the point? We're not raising, we're not learning and we can't go down and visit, I see no point in spending the money. Mind you, there's a lot of things we spend money on that I see no point in but others wouldn't agree. It's just my opinion but if I was being asked to pay for this exploration I'd have said no. Maybe I'm overly pragmatic but to me, there has to be a valid point to this kind of thing, we have to learn something. PS, I would love to get on one of our nuclear subs for a nose around!

This 100%! For lads of our generation raised on Commando and Battle comics the Shackleton expedition is the Boys’ Own story to beat them all. I’ve got a bust of Shackleton on top of a low bookcase that holds everything I’ve collected over the years on the Nimrod Expedition, and I still find it as exciting leafing through now as when I was in Infant school. Waking up the other morning to the news that Endurance had been located I was suddenly eight-years-old again... then reality kicked in and I had to go to work. Absolutely magnificent!

I was raised on Commando comics too Loh. Maybe I just put my rose tinted glasses away. I feel the same about many old buildings. We spend millions on keeping old buildings standing, repairing things that it would be better and cheaper to knock down and replace, like the Palace of Westminster. Then there's no money for schools and hospitals. Ironically, I felt the other way about the Senedd building, why spend all that money building it when we already had buildings fit to house it but that would have meant it not being in Cardiff! I'm complex!

If you didn’t know it was real you’d automatically assume it was impossible, Keith. If you’re ever asked what ‘exceptionalism’ means you don’t have to answer, just hand them a copy of Worsley’s book and say ‘let’s have a chat this time next week!’

Have you ever visited the Palace of Westminster, Cat? I won’t bore everybody by repeating the same stories over and over but, suffice to say, when I first went there it was mesmerising.

I have been there, I've been to Buck house too. I'm all for preserving the past when it's useful but you have to balance cost against reward.
