Let’s start playing the players you want then Russell 12th Aug 2022 18:34
Swansea City manager Russell Martin has bigged up his favourite players this week and that’s a pleasing thing to hear for sure. With Kyle Joseph, Morgan Whittaker and Jordon Garrick all out on loan and not on Martin’s mind he has mentioned twenty two year old Ollie Cooper as a player he likes a lot. Tomorrows game by the seaside, a place once awash with household names on the pier is nowadays more about the price of a pint and a cheap night out. 1

Ollie Cooper anyone ?

YES. I gree with every word. At Oxford I thought he'd put too many kids in but they did well and it was the seniors that let us down. We absolutely should be giving a couple of the youngsters much more playing time. Given the form Start Cooper and if he's fit then why not start Congreve too?
Pato has hardly been great, nor Fulton and Grimes.

So why not have a midfield three of Allen, Cooper, Grimes. Then why not play Ogbeta in his favoured position? If he's fit I'd start Congreve ahead of Pato too. That's 3 youngsters, still plenty of experience around them and just maybe the enthusiasm of youth would help us along?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Which seniors let us down?

Well Ntcham and Allen and of course martin for making those 4 changes at the same time.

Until those changes we were running the show. Interesting to see the claim that Allen isn't match fit yet, if he' not fit enough should he be on the bench?

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

Cooper and Congreve are competing for the positions Piroe, Paterson and Ntcham are used in. The alternative to Fulton while Allen is building up to fitness is Dan Williams.

If we play three in midfield then Piroe's going to be the 10, no question. Paterson left wing, Cooper/Congreve right. Martin won't be confident in using a back four though.

Didn't he play Cooper in the deep 2 against Oxford though, alongside Fulton.

He could play Cooper, Congreve and Piroe with Obafemi up front and drop Paterson to the bench?

I'm not sure why I'm bothering though, we know Martin will go with the same formation, the wing backs etc.

It's another day of hoping for better beckons.

Just my opinion, but WTF do I know anyway?

With the back four we played against Oxford maybe we can get away with playing a ball-carrying attacking midfielder as the second man in the middle, as the fullbacks tuck in and we had two wingbacks playing as out and out wingers. I'd be wary of playing him there in the Championship. For Newport he was always either a number 10 running beyond two strikers, or wider in a flat three midfield. In the u23s most of his games were played wide in a front three.

But I didn't think Byers would make a holding midfielder either, so what do I know. Players often change role as they progress in senior football. If we were looking for an engine room player then I'd be using Dan over Ollie though.

I wouldn't mind th wing backs tucking back in and having Darling push through into midfield when we're going forward, he can pass and as we have seen, he can shoot too.

I'm in the same camp as you though, what do I know!
