| Swansea Indepenent Poster Of The Year 2021. Dr P / Mart66 / Roathie / Parlay / E20/ Duffle was 2nd, but he is deluded and thinks in his little twisted brain that he won. Poor sod. We let him win this year, as he has cried for a whole year. His 14 usernames, bless his cotton socks.

Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess? Ye have no more religion than my horse; gold is your God; which of you have not barter’d your conscience for bribes? Is there a man amongst you that has the least care for the good of the Commonwealth? Ye sordid prostitutes have you not defil’d this sacred place, and turn’d the Lord’s temple into a den of thieves, by your immoral principles and wicked practices? Ye are grown intolerably odious to the whole nation; you were deputed here by the people to get grievances redress’d, are yourselves gone! So! Take away that shining bauble there, and lock up the doors. In the name of God, GO!

That was Oliver Cronwells speech when he disolved the long Parliament in 1653. In a sure sign that politics has always been corrupt it s every bit as accurate and relevant as it was back then.

That was Cromwell solidifying his power. He’d gone full circle and become the very thing he had fought against for the last decade plus. He was now sovereign, sitting in the palace of Whitehall on the throne of the old kings being called “your highness” and he would not have any meddlesome parliament curbing his power, getting in the way of his plans. How dare they oppose him? The lord protector?

Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and it’s not unique to this country, look at places like Zimbabwe, Russia etc where one person has been in charge for such a long time. During this parliament the government have made attempts to make themselves less accountable by limiting the scope of judicial reviews, they’ve resisted FOI requests and deleted material on What’s App etc. What is clear is that we need beefed up FOI laws and accountability that apply to all politicians at all levels across the political spectrum. We also need a free press, one which is able to expose wrong doing but must also be responsible and accountable when it deliberately publishes lies and behaves appallingly. Increased transparency will result in increased accountability. [Post edited 1 May 2023 7:28]

Hell yeah Cromwell grabbed power and became a dictator but his speech was and is still very apt.
