This is what really annoys me, Southgate says he called Ivan Toney to tell him his England place for next year is not under threat, and states his punishment is harsh.

As if he had a gambling addiction, which is just nonsense. He had a greed addiction.

Toney gets paid £200,000 a week and has a five year contact, part of the deal is that he does not bet on football. Betting on things like horses and in casinos is permitted. My grandmother would have had some choice words for him.

There seems to be a rush in some circles to exonerate him of blame. Personal responsibility seems to be a thing of the past.

Football it seems to me has some tolerance to betting. This is exactly what the sharks probably from the east are looking for.

If there is any route to get their tentacles in to referees goal keepers penalty takers they will go for it. If you know the result before the game there is millions to be made for very little risk.

Soft penalties means tolerance and that means a corrupted sport and decline as seen in Italy.

Three players were jailed for betting and match fixing in the 1960s so Toney's punishment does not seem harsh in comparison especially as back in the 1960s players were very poorly paid unlike Toney who is earning £10 million a year.

It is not harsh .
He has had it reduced on appeal then got a doctor to convince he has a problem and needs help.
Played into his hands .

Toney was just betting though not match fixing.

He got the same punishment that Rio Ferdinand got for avoiding a drugs test tho 💁🏻‍♀️

Morning Keith.
Yes,”just” betting but on his own team.
He was in a position to influence results.
Surely.

Not sure each way he was betting ( scuse the pun ) whether it was positive or negative. Surely if negative he would get a life ban ? If positive meaning they win and he scores goals then surely a lot better.

People like Toney don't gamble because they want or need more money. They gamble for the buzz of it.

Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

i had to laugh at Talksport covering this issue. Leanne Sanderson who I knew would be sympathetic to him stated several times. "he made a mistake" and should be cut some slack.

It was nonsense, He made 233 or so mistakes over a couple of years. I was tempted to phone up and correct her but you have to be careful in these legal matters. He also put bets on games he was involved in reportedly. This was using inside information and would be classed as "insider trading" in the business world.

To be fair to him never misses penalties. I doubt his betting affected any results.
