Matt Grimes today 21:15 - Mar 21 with 2219 viewsswancity

Thoughts?

My view; His range of passing, awareness and first touch and ability to dictate the tempo of a game mean that he’s a shrewd operator in this division. Rarely loses possession his long range passing today was also sublime

He had a bit of stick off some of our supporters but by the end I think everyone just realised that he’s a good player who also chose not to celebrate his goal, again showing his quality.

Only an idiot would eat a turkey curry on Christmas day

There was one class moment when Ronald went down 'injured', so Grimes and a team-mate passed the ball back and forth until Ronald got back up. No need for the referee to stop the game. Great awareness.

The move was good for club and player. He did what he always does and did it well enough. His corners have definitly improved. Some very dodgy chants were started but didn't last long thankfully. Players family members should never be considered fair game, unless it's Eddie May's wife

I understand the accusation was brushed aside by Eddie at the time.

We ended up being passive in our press didn't stop the switch of play, if you want play in the opposition's half let the opposition goal have it, get your marking right and when the mistake is made then pounce, all about biding your time get in the right position to capitalise on the loose ball. Any high ball from the goalie should be dealt with by a competent centrehalf and picked up brought down and distributed by a midfield in the right position to do so.
Cooper's team around Grimes meant possession was won and the ball was moved forward fast , Fulton and Korey Smith had their plus points and limitations, Gallagher was a bonus and Hourihane wasn't enough to win a midfield battle to allow Grimes to operate properly. By the second half the damage was done and keep ball was all they needed to do which we know Grimes can do without enough pressure on him. Grimes had quality around him that we didn't stifle properly.

Another good point Richard, you would have thought as an experienced pro at Swansea with a strong mind and a leader off the pitch he would have seen it for himself. And done something about it, much the same as his manufactured move to Coventry.

I know of one chap who nicknamed him the ‘handbrake’

He has his good points and bad points which we didn't exploit or target. Team game and having the right players around him has helped, as has having an ex-midfielder as a manager, how many shooting, chances have we seen turned down by Grimes under instruction to find the perfect opportunity to shoot, Lampard shots and goals score often because of ricochets. Was Grimes a strong captain on and off the field who knows but once Hourihane came to us and scored a wonder goal in more or less his first game Grimes feeling threatened responded instantly to score in the same manner. Had thing become too comfortable for him here and he needed to move.
