Whenever this subject comes up, the question I always have is whether we are judging athletes from history in their time, or if we are hypothetically placing them in the present, competing with modern-day athletes?
This certainly applies to Babe Ruth. In his time, he was certainly the GOAT and changed the sport more than anyone in history (and there is no close 2nd place). But if he were facing modern-day pitching with the insane stuff they throw now, I'm not sure he'd even have much of career in the major leagues.

Tums I’d say as their influence on their day and the records of their achievements We good also add the way they changed their sport In this regard Jack Dempsey was/ is certainly a contender as the GOAT in boxing as he bade the sport acceptable and respectable to the USA Without doubt his name shall live for evermore His record wasn’t the best but his reputation and standing is still immense One of my first sporting heroes

I believe you always have to think about them in their era and assume that would translate to the modern day.
The one I always think of is Gareth Edwards. A giant of the game in the 70s but imagine him now in the professional era with the current access to training, strength and conditioning, nutrition etc.

I think Scottie Scheffler (only 30 yrs old) will be included in this group when his career is over. I especially admire Senior Golfer Bernhard Langer, who blossomed after turning 50 yrs old. He's won 47 times on the Senior Champions Tour, with 12 majors!! Golf is my favorite sport; it boils down to just you in golf, with no one else to blame.
Tennis - Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. Djokovic holds the most Grand Slam titles (24).
Soccer - Pele, Messi, Ronaldo are the easy picks. But I'm always intrigued by the yesteryear standouts of the Premier League like Dwight Yorke, George Best, Thierry Henry, & Alan Shearer. Harry Kane will be one of those when he retires even though he's finishing up his career in the Bundesliga. The top offensive players will always grab the headlines and accolades.

Just a point its not Soccer its football as in the initials FIFA. Plus the Premier League didn't exist when the likes of George Best played, it was the First Division. Splitting hairs I know but facts often are.
