Apparently we are in the habit of building wind farms without any connection to the grid and paying for the electricity we don't get. £1.5 Billion this year and £10 Billion by 2030.
Its been happening for years , the planning consent doesn't align with the grid ability to allow say a 1000mw to be connected so the wind farm gets built but the turbines remain inoperable which isn't condusive to its mechanical needs nor to the locals who may have objected to the wind farm being built in the first place.

I would be sacked for executing a business case with no certainty of benefits realisation.

Its incredible as to what is going on behind the scene's in this current period of time, Britain is corrupt from top to bottom, but those with power and influence get things hidden away.

It’s like they are declaring war on the silent majority.
The absolute contempt that the Government has for the people is making it more and more likely that they're ultimately not answering to them.
Jacinda Ardern is another one. A Blair protege who screwed New Zealand and now lives in a multi-million dollar beachfront house in Sydney. Job done, payoff received.
Pain or damage don't end the world. Or despair, or f*cking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man... and give some back.

The root cause of this is privatisation. Everything is done piece meal and usually very poorly project managed, with the aim of doing things as cheaply as possible. It doesn't work. We're the only country in Europe with generation and connection to the grid solely in private hands.
The government owns NESO who balance demand but by that time it's far too late.
And demonstrates why Reform's "net stupid zero" policy is probably the biggest backward step in UK infrastructre development in history.
Just take a look at these proposals. It's absolutely essential, but is going to really struggle to ever be built.

The Government grants these licenses and puts the cart before the horse. It is simple mis management.
This is a Tory and Labour mess of poor contracts and a total absence of supplier management.

The problem is Government intervention. The vast majority of the time the problem is Government intervention.
Let energy companies get on with the business of competing with each other whilst keeping oversight/regulation as low as possible and prices will come down. That's what happens in basically every other industry.
The idea that the same kind of Government that can't even get the NHS to work properly despite 1.5m employees and a budget north of £200bn could manage power supply as well is insane. We'd all have to go back to candles and coal.

I'm not sure what licences you mean? In general though they can only apporve what's applied for - they have no say on what projects are planned.
From what I can see is there is a lack of strategic control, becasue there is nobody to have that control. The individual companies plan and build their power stations, then they look at connecting them to the grid - usually becasue that's the easiest path to follow, and because having the power station generating power puts pressure on others to ensure it's available.
NESO, the only public body in this situation, don't get involved until it's too late.
The devolved power solution mentioned in that article would likley be great for us in S Wales but may increase bills in places like London.

Government decides what contracts are required and puts them out to tender,. Government decides via planning laws what infrastructure can be built. Energy Companies can only build what they have permission to build. The Government has recently let generation contracts where the payment for generation is higher than what we are paying now!
Private Companies are cashing in because the Government is letting duff contracts, why?

Well the rest of Europe seems to be doing better than us - we've even had to contract the construction of our largest power station to the French state owned energy company.

Yes, better strategic planning over many decades in some countries, but not all.
Germany is in a poor place having been reliant on cheap Russian gas to run it's industries, poor governance allowing the country to have a single point of failure.
Norway is great example of good long term strategic planning; building good home hydroelectricity capacity over decades whilst selling it's gas to the World and banking the cash into a Sovereign fund. All those decisions were made by Government.
Here's a decent video about what has happened in Germany and the poor decisions made by Government.

But they can only get permission for what they apply for, that project should be fully aware of planning legislation, comply with it and getting consent should be forgone conclusion. That is what the planning system is set up to deal with - the problem is that this doesn't happen, to try and save cash.
Then they need to sort a grid connection, effectively they're back to square one.
The Mid Wales pylons are a key example, the easiest path to get planning is to put them underground. At least 3 years later they're still arguing the toss over putting 100's of KMS of pylons thorugh Mid-Wales with the local community, councils etc. But pylons are a lot cheaper. This connection won't be built before the early 2030's at the earliest.
Only after this can they bid for a CFD allocation. NESO are last in the queue.
It fails at the first hurdle because they try to cut cost to maximise profit, this may work to a certain degree in some places but just delays the entire system, sometimes by decades.

The Government is responsible for the legislation framework that either enables or hinders strategic development. If people breach the legal framework there should be legal recourse.
The Government is responsible for a legal and planning framework that enables the good delivery of strategy.
It's very simple the Government has let contracts where generators are paid to generate electricity for the country regardless of whether or not the energy they supply can be used by the country and you and I are paying for it.

That's because its an open market, we have the capability to do the builds ourself ,with many projects currently ongoing with a mix of public and private investment , although we do seem to rely on overseas countries to manufacture wind turbines and its associated HV equipment .People, businesses etc want cheap energy so would you not expect that the tendering process to consider cheaper options ?

Anyone who belives that its easy to just bury HV conductors underground is mistaken , its on average 4.5 times more expensive to bury than to use the overhead line method .,and if a whole route was buried how would those cables be kept cool so it's not just dig a hole and stick them in . There are a few but sections of routes buried but in the main they're overhead for reasons , one cost , another maintenance and repair. Those in the countryside want a reliable and regular supply of energy as long as it dosen't spoil their view, once anyone mentions pylons there's a glut of letters to the editor

Which is exactly why they want to go overhead.
These kind of things (water is another) are nationally important infrastructre. It shouldn't be exclusively private companies responsible for them

But there is no strategic oversight, and any breach of planning legislation means things don't get built, and there is absolutely no need not to adhere to planning legislation with good project management.
Key infrastructre should be provided by the state at least in part to maintain control, if they need or want to sell parts of it on that may be feasible but as things stand and is mentoned in that article:-
"Britain’s electricity grid often cannot move all the power from where it is being generated to where it is needed"
Natinol Grid is privately owned and listed in London and New York, making money for investors is their priority. It's bonkers.

Its not the fact that National Grid is privately owned , which is bonkers, its the fact that we could be self sufficent in fuelling gas, coal or oil fired powerstaions not forgetting nuclear + our interconnectors between europe but not having a stateic plan on how to replace all the ones now closed , we had in s Wales alone Pembroke, Aberthaw, Usksmouth Rogerstone all with the exception of Pembroke closed with nothing to replace them ,its the drive towards renewables without an interim plan which is bonkers .National Grid probably has the most stable network in Europe dispite its connection issues .

When have prices come down? Ever since privatisation the only thing that's reduced is the standard of service, prices have risen, profits have risen with wages for top earners and share dividends rising a lot but the servie we get is poorer.
People say socialism doesn't work, never has but capitalism....well capitalism has been a vehicle for moving wealth from the poorer to the richer, it doesn't work for the majority.

and capitalism in many forms gives the lower "classes" an opportuntity to become wealthier ,something denied by a totalitarian state ,something which this country is heading towards imo.

The private ownership definitely is bonkers as well. Energy is a basic need for the population, it shouldn't be run to provide profit for shareholders, it should be run to benefit the country.
We have been sold down the river. The infrastructure has been allowed to rot for our essential services but the prices keep rising.
