There is a shortage of drivers across Europe, wages there have gone up too. How many foreign drivers are going to uproot themselves for a temporary visa? These people in government are supposed to be experts or at least have expert advisors yet they seem to more inclined to listen to the chuckle brothers and the Three Stooges! They should be making HGV training more accessible and easy to pay for, should be getting thetesting sorted so people aren't waiting so long and working in tandem with the companies so people know where the jobs are or even have ajob lined up when they are taking their test.

There were quite a few redundancies in the haulage industry after the recession in 2009 and the then government lowered the minimum age to 18 from 21 to try and encourage more into the profession ( i use that term lightly now after witnessing so many so called professional drivers driving like idiots) . I suppose at a cost of for a LGV 1 platinum package, which includes 24.5 hours of training, full articulated vehicle and trailer, the DVSA test at £2,275 then maybe it is prohibited to many

There is a shortage of HGV drivers in Europe, but when you look at the numbers and consider the populations of the UK and EU it’s a much bigger issue here than it is in the EU. Can’t see many HGV divers giving up a steady regular income in the EU to come and work here for less than 3 months. The people in government are politicians, a large number of them wont have any specific knowledge on the issues which face our country (was it Raab who had no idea as to the importance of Dover to imports and exports?) and they rely on Specialist Advisors (a large number of whom are aspiring politicians and looking to get on the gravy train) and the Civil Service. In some cases it’s the blind leading the blind. Not arguing with you on making HGV training more accessible, there should also be some central mandates about provision of services for HGV’s in each local authority area, overnight lorry parks etc. I’d agree there needs to be some foresight around strategic issues which affect the country, kind of a National Risk Register and pulling together to deliver the goals.
