It's basic poor economics. If you pump money into the economy with no increase in production then there is more money to pay for the same outputs. If you pump in trillions demand will increase and so prices, throw in a few supply chain issues and a labour shortage and prices climb quickly. Unfortunately Biden thinks the solution is to pump in more money, this fuels inflation. Janet Yellen who runs the treasury is a career politician / academic who has no real experience of running a business or even managing a payroll for example. [Post edited 10 Nov 2021 20:08]

If an economy heats up too quickly then inflation can happen because of an increase in the money supply, whether it's printed or as a result of increased productivity. Higher interest rates or higher unemployment can be used to dampen it down. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Yes, normally you use interest rate rises to calm the economy. The US has so much government, corporate and household debt now that any significant increase in rates would mean cutting back on government spending, businesses going bust and property repossession leading to recession and high unemployment. Instead Biden keeps pumping up the money supply feeding a price and wage inflationary spiral.

Mortgages? probably the biggest single monthly expenditure of the average family. Until we see the rise there, which will come, the figure will be artificially low.

We are on a fixed rate for the next 8 years! A lot of things have gone up, don't know about 10% but there have been plenty of price rises. petrol for example, a few weeks ago I was paying 1.32 per litre, this week I paid 1.44. What's that 8-9%. Our gas and electricity bill, we are duel fuel and the new tariff we had to move to last month saw our bill increase by 33%. We have a back boiler which is already more expensive, that triggered us to order a new combi which is being fitted Monday. When petrol goes up everything else goes up. Fuel poverty will catch up with a few this winter. Food prices have gone up more than 3%. Otherwise the biggest price rises have been for non essential things, garden furniture and equipment saw massive rises, wood rose by 40%. At least our mortgage won't go up, yet.

I did say the average family Cat, you are one of the lucky ones, as are the mortgage free. When the rate goes up, as it surely will, it will hit hard. At least they won't have to endure the 15% rate I had in the early 80s.

We are an extremely average family I'll have you know It wasn't luck either, when we moved in 2019 there were financial warnings that low interest rates could be coming to an end. The pandemic extended them but we'd looked at the longest fixed rate (10 years) and decided that while we we'd be paying a bit extra for a few years, if things went bad we'd save a fortune, so we went for it. The way they are talking now, in 12 months we'll be better off. Mortgages are a scam anyway.

I'm not saying anything like 3% but you can not just make up inflation figures and select items to suit your agenda. Everything has not gone up by 10% and that is a simple fact.
