| New EU Passport Rules 14:40 - Feb 11 with 1015 views | STID2017 | For those planning to travel to the EU, please check out the new rules. From what I understand the 6th months left rule is no longer the benchmark. Rules are a bit fuzzy but people being refused passage and in at least one instance take off a flight after boarding | |

| New EU Passport Rules on 20:43 - Feb 11 with 954 views | majorraglan | We’re going away next month, the wife will have just over 3 months left on her passport when we get back which is, according to the Spanish government ok - I am a tad apprehensive. A major issue post Brexit is that the EU define the expiry date of the 10 year period as being 10 years from the date of issue, they don’t accept any additional period added to the 10 year period in lieu of the passport which was being surrendered. | | | |

Thanks. I suspect your uncle and the people he was traveling with will be very upset and it's totally understandable. To get turned away like that is just terrible. If you hear anything would you mind posting it on here, really interested to find out what happened. If wifey needs to do an emergency passport it’s mega expensive.

Another case of the EU being unhelpful and beauracratic. They are willing to harm their own tourist industry just to punish the UK. The international standard has always meant passports are valid for travel as long as they have 6 months left before the expiry date. Time to stop letting in travellers from the EU unless the EU honour reciprocal travel arrangements. Current Spanish passport requirements 1 less than 10 years old on the day you enter Spain, check date of issue. 2 valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Spain, check expiry date. But they aren’t just punishing the U.K. passport holders and anyone who says so is wrong. They are now applying the same rules to our passports as they’ve always applied to the citizens of “Third Countries” which is that passports must be less than 10 years old. Early renewals of passports and carrying forward any remaining time on the previous document no longer count. We are now a “Third Country” as we’ve left the EU and we no longer have any special treatments. Edit typo [Post edited 14 Feb 2022 22:57]

No they are just punishing the business in Spain that rely on tourists. Perhaps it is time we insisted in all Irish citizens have valid passports for entry into the UK including NI or maybe we could be still be flexible and pragmatic. Must say the Spanish in Tenerife were very welcoming to the British on my recent visit. They had even set up three different immigration queues. 1. EU passports holders 2. UK passports holders 3 Other passports holders The queue at the UK passports holders was shorter and quicker than the EU passports holders queue. The moral is just make sure your passports is valid and up-to-date for the country you visit. If it has less than 6 months to run get it renewed.

Yes seems obvious but do it well before you are thinking of travelling to avoid having to pay extra to rush it through

They aren’t punishing Spanish businesses, they are just enforcing their long standing rules and regulations which apply to “Third Countries” across the Schengen area.
