Did we play th total possession thing or were we more pragmatic again? Edit, from the really very limited highlights it looked like we were more pragmatic again and we got a great result. Maybe Martin has learned? We still made our usual mistake for their goal though, a loose pass across our own goal. Obafemi looked good though, we used his pace well and the ball by Fisher straight to Downes who then played it through, we really caught them on the hop with quick, direct passing. So that's a lot more positive right there. [Post edited 6 Mar 2022 0:00]

It is certainly a change in style. Faster tempo, sacrificing short negative passes for purposeful quick ones. We played the more long and direct balls yesterday then we have all season. At half time it was 17.5%, whisper it quietly... but that is in the range of what we saw last season. 54% possession too being well below our season average of 64%. 5 passes for goal number 1 2 passes for goal number 2 (including a 50 yard one bypassing the defensive passes) 1 pass for goal number 3 The difference is stark to the usual stuff where we have had 10 passes before we even get out of our defensive third, and of course by that time they are already back in their positions. So it is extremely positive IF (and its a big if because we have been here before and it was ditched) we stick with this direct approach. I feel a lot of people are quite negative on the quality of our players, I think we have a cracking bunch. Piroe and Obafemi up front is the best we have ever had in this division to take just one area. Grimes, Downes, Naughton, Cabango, Ntcham, Christie could all probably slot into Premier League squads. | |
