| Battle of Barossa 5th March 1811 17:31 - Mar 6 with 1152 views | Thrasher6 | For those interested. Just finished a march from Algeciras to the battleground in Chiclana. Took us 5 days...130kms. As the British did to meet the French and defeat them on the day...in The Peninsular War. We laid a wreath to appreciate their sacrifice.. A great 5 five days. But it was pretty tough. I doff my hat to how tough these men were then. We had certain comforts and modern equipment. .they would have had none. At the end of it they fought a battle as well. Extraordinary. (The West Brom result on the first night gave me a spring in my step....and we laid the wreath just as the final whistle blew in the Coventry match.) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Barrosa?wprov=sfla1 [Post edited 6 Mar 2022 17:34]

Thanks Lohengrin, it was a great trip. Felt a real empathy with what ordinary soldiers of the day had to endure...

Not from me, I've always wanted to do something like that but at 54 with a new hip a 130km walk might be a bit much. Next year me and my son (because he really wants to) are heading to France to watch a PSG game, he wants to see Messi live before he retires. What he doesn't know is, part of my plan is to go to Ouistreham, https://en.normandie-tourisme.fr/museums-and-heritage-sites/atlantic-wall-museum I want to see where my Grandad waded ashore, well as near as can be figured out. Sword beach wth Lord Lovatt's mob.

We did it to replicate what the British troops under Graham did. They landed at Algeciras, marched to Tarifa, then to Fascinas, then to Benalup, then to Vejer and then onto the the battle at Barossa Hill.

It's long been an ambition to get to Normandy beachhead. I'm not obsessed with WW2 but I am mildly obsessed with my grandads story. Reading his letters home, knowing the family story, it all really touches me. I've said before he was a Royal Marine Commando, he was anti war but still went to fight. At some point in my life he became my hero. I read about the Peninsular wars too. I love history but human history is so full of war and destruction. It's such a shame.

Where we live is where the French were based, within site of San Fernando, they got routed by the British who ambushed them from the Medina side of Chiclana. A mate of mine here is well in to the history of this period. How those British soldiers felt in extreme heat in their red uniforms is beyond me. Trafalgar is within site of Barossa as well. The history here is amazing.
