| Sizewell C 13:31 - Sep 1 with 3274 views | britferry | Boris says we will pump in £700m. The project, which is being developed by French energy company EDF, is estimated to cost about £20bn overall. If the French government can own a power company that can invest their money in overseas projects and keep down their own domestic prices, then why can't the UK do the same? | |

A bit like most people do no care what Corbyn, Starmer think or do. Even most people in Wales are fed up with the useless Senedd led by the backward looking Drakeford.

Mainly because killy went of topic again and of course power from Sizewell will benefit the whole of the UK. Thank it is a fact judging from the majority of posters on this forum that even anong Labour supporters Drakeford is not popular. Of course in your opinion both Putin and Drakeford are popular throughout the world. That is of course just your opinion and in a free democracy you are entitled to say that even when you are wrong.

Even an idiot like you knows it takes around 15 years to plan, and go through the various planning appeals etc then to build a nuclear power station. Hinckley point is due to open in 2025 even with the year delay caused by covoid. This means the process must have started around 2010 and 2011. Tony Blair and Gordon Brown put a stop to building any new nuclear power stations when they were in power between 1997 and 2010. So looks like Tony (weapons of mass destruction) Blair has got it wrong again.

Wrong. In 2005 Tony Blair commissioned an energy review which identified the requirement for nuclear energy and in 2006 following completion of the review an agency of the Health and Safety Executive began looking at designs. Subsequent legal challenges saw the review “thrown out” and the review had to be redone. In 2008 the UK government gave the go-ahead for a new generation of nuclear power plants to be developed which would assist the UK reduce carbon emissions, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and provide energy security. In September 2008 EDF announced that they planned to build a new nuclear power plant at Hinckley Point and early enabling and preparatory work commenced. It’s clear that Tony Blair and Gordon Brown didn’t “put a stop” to building nuclear power stations as you’ve claimed. In 2010, the new LD/Conservative coalition announced 8 sites including HP were suitable for nuclear power plans. In 2011 the Fukushima disaster occurred and that delayed things. In 2013 negotiations between EDF and the government relating to tariffs broke down and took several years to resolve. EDF and the Conservative Government were responsible for other delays and it wasn’t until 2016 that the project was approved!!! In 2017 construction eventually got underway. During the years of procrastination costs went up significantly and they’ve continued to climb, the latest estimate is £ 26bn which is nearly 50% over budget.

All correct as you state under labour no new nuclear power stations were built and no construction on any nuclear power stations even started. Seems sensible to check the design of Hinckley point C following Fukushima disaster and the design was indeed changed and a huge sea wall has now been constructed, which is 900m long 13.5m high to protect the site from any foreseeable storm surge. No surprise this had led to an increase in the cost of the project. The coviod outbreak also led to increased costs and delays with extra security put in place and effectively creating a "bubble" on site to keep construction staff safe. Germany of course totally panicked and shut down most of its nuclear power stations. Out of a total of 26 nuclear power stations only 6 were operational at the start of 2021 with 3 being closed down in 2021 and the remaining 3 due to close this year. In August Germany announced plans to postpone the closure of its last three working nuclear power station.

You actually said Blair and Brown put a stop on building any power stations which wasn’t the case, whilst they didn’t build any power stations they got the ball rolling. It’s a pity the current lot took over 4 years negotiate a price with constructors, had they been a bit quicker we’d have had the project coming online next year.

They did put a stop on it when they came to power in 1997 as it was against labour's anti nuclear power. The fact they changed their minds 10 years later does not alter the facts. If labour had pushed ahead in 1997 we would have had two or three nuclear power stations operational by now and would not be suffering from sky high electricity prices. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but labour were wrong to stop it in 1997.

Nuclear power is very expensive, so that argument is not valid. Do you really think the big companies would let us have electricity cheaply? We would still have high gas prices, regardless

Electricity from nuclear cost about 10p per Kw Electricity from gas currently cost 30p per Kw which will rise to about 50p when price cap is removed. That is why of course France generates so much of its Electricity from nuclear as does Ukraine and Russia.
