Interesting to see our goal difference is zero , just saying

"In a free society, the State is the servant of the people—not the master."

Martin's whole managerial career has been mid table. He had slipped below mid table but somehow you always sensed he would get back to mid table security. He had been mid table in League 1 and is no mid table in the Championship. Good runs of form and bad runs of form.

He presumably would do better if he could keep Piroe, Manning and Wood and others for next season and add 3-4 good players and get a Steve Cooper style run of consistency (with out the parachute payments).

He does not want "His managerial careers was singularly bang average" on his epitaph.
I am happy for him if he can beat last season 61 points and demonstrate year on year progress, This should happen as Benda, Wood, Darling, Cabango Piroe, Cooper, Cullen mature into their mid twenty peak years.

A regression from the parachute years was inevitable.

Wise sage since Toshack era
Poll: Will Cabango and Darling sign new contracts?

Parachute payments are to absorb the cost of relegation, not to fund a lavish attack on the league as described or alluded to by many.

It largely covers historical player amortisation and Premier League contracts that cannot be offloaded. For example the likes of Narsingh, Dyer, Borja, Routledge etc etc who barely played yet still had their Premier League wages.

Those years were a burden and not a benefit, Steve Cooper spent about £500k in one particular season. People point to the loans but they were either low cost or free, that was out of necessity, the outgoings would have been just too high to service those historical overheads plus spending millions on new players.

Having Ayew on 80k a week is a horrendous millstone around the neck, when you can have a Piroe for 15% of that, squad structure wise there was almost no room for manoeuvre.

Russell in his two years has had a blank canvas in terms of creativity and shaping the squad, and he’s pretty much painted a stick man and trying to pass it off as a Picasso.

Swansea Independent Poster of the Year 2021 and 2022.
Poll: Would you swap Ayew for Piroe?

I prefer L. S. Lowry to Picasso anyway.
