| Bigger killer of under 35.Suicide on 12:53 - Jun 30 with 750 views | union_jack | We’re living in desperate times I believe. Social media though being a major improvement in our lives has a very dark side especially with teenagers. The economic climate especially with interest rates rising, food prices going up and no hope getting in the housing ladder for so many will play its part. Also, I don’t think we are as resilient as previous generations. Being in touch with your emotions is clearly a good thing but sometimes burying your head in the sand and getting on with it may be a better strategy. It’s very much horses for courses rather than one size fits all. | |

One of my children has lost 2 mates to suicide, one was 16 years of age and the second was 18/19. I’ve a relative who volunteers for the Samaritans, she never talks about it other than to say there are some pretty desperate people out there and what she does gives her a great deal of satisfaction.

It’s a big issue alright . My brother in laws dad hung himself at 33 and he found him hanging from the bannisters after coming home from school. He s 70 now and it is still visceral. In plod, I dealt with far too many and some of them haven’t exited my head over 40 yrs later

This is very true. There are pages on social media encouraging suicide and self harm, pages set up to ruin peoples lives and the social media platforms just do not deal with them quickly enough. I agree about resilience too. Teens in university needing "safe spaces" from nasty words. People being told we are not allowed to criticise but must only encourage. Kids leaving school thinking life will be easy, it must come as a nasty surprise, the real world. It's even there on school sports days, they don't have losers and they ALL get medals, coming first is treated no differently to last in some schools. I've been doing a lot of burying my head in the sand and getting on with it these last few months and that will continue for several months yet. I don't let the problem affect me in work, I don't take it out on friends or run and cry every time something hits the surface. People, well young people need to learn to deal with problems, not ignore them or run and hide.

| Bigger killer of under 35.Suicide on 00:15 - Jul 1 with 591 views | Robbie | Luckily grew up on a big council housing estate where , at that time everybody knew everybody else as their neighbours , the times as a kid I rowed with my parents , went next door walked in uninvited and my lovely neighbours gave me a glass of pop and a biscuit . After an hour watching tele in their parlour , went back home in a better state of mind . Now alas , when people have issues their first port of call for help is the internet , as mentioned earlier , students , work placements , all a long way from close family ties leading to isolation and nobody to seriously talk about problems . Social media and internet , I log on for a bit of entertainment and general nonsense . Now it seems if some people allow peer pressure from their mobile phone that is enough to tip the balance to awful actions then for families to suffer the tragic cosequences . | | | |
