PDL : Swansea City U21 v Crewe Alexandra 07:15 - Aug 21 with 1306 viewsKeithHaynes

Josh Ginnelly to start today.

Nothing on the OS until this morning. You would have thought with it being the summer holidays and parents looking for something to take the kids to this would be advertised in advance.

OS : Swansea City Under-21s will be on home soil for the first time this season when they welcome Crewe Alexandra to the Swansea.com Stadium on Monday afternoon (1pm kick-off).

This fixture is free to attend, and tickets can be claimed HERE.

Last season, the young Swans enjoyed a 100% win rate in their five games at the ground, and finishing off the 2022-23 campaign with a 10-1 victory over Birmingham City at the home of the senior side.

The age-grade side fell to defeat against Barnsley in their opening game of the Professional Development League season last week at Oakwell and will be looking to bounce back.

Meanwhile, it was a point apiece for the Railwaymen in their season opener at home to Bristol City.

Pre-match views -

Coach Anthony Wright: "It's always a great opportunity to play at the stadium, and for it to be the first home game of the season is great. Hopefully, we can get a good crowd there as it's the summer holidays, the support means a lot to the boys. We played Crewe away last season, and it was a tough game. We've had a good pre-season and a competitive pre-season, so we're looking forward to it."

Although the ‘academy’ Twitter feed has info which we have retweeted.

NTO had a good performance, he took a little bit of time to get into the game but like all Dutch players has a good touch and passes and moves expecting the ball. Did track back well and not afraid to put his foot in. Made one excellent tackle in first half.

GInenlly looked very comfortable and unlucky not to get a few, he stepped on the ball 1st half when it looked easier to score. MYKOLO looked very raw but did get into good positions but was a bit like Shefki Kuqi when he hit the ball he has no idea where it is going, not anywhere near 1st team yet in my opinion but he did take his goal well but Ginnelly had put it on a plate for him.

Morgan came on to replace the 1st team players so had about 25 mins to get into game, a big lad and looks physically bigger than his team mates git the post and skied a few before taking his goal which was as a result of their keeper coming to play it out and getting closed down by Morgan. You can see he has something about him but nowhere near 1st team football yet in my opinion.

Sam Parker and Ben Blythe good wingbacks, Parker a little greedy on occasion but will be in 1st team at some stage.

Kyrell Mitchell came on with Morgan and was a tricky little winger, reminded me a bit of Routlidge and was unlucky to not pick up a goal

Abdulai and Congreve looked very comfortable and probably the best players out there.

Life is an adventure or nothing at all.

MATCH REPORT OS

Josh Ginnelly and Mykola Kuharevich got more valuable minutes under their belt and got on the scoresheet as they helped Swansea City Under-21s to a handsome victory against Crewe Alexandra at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Sam Parker – fresh from signing professional terms with the Swans – scored his first goal for the under-21s by netting the opener 20 minutes in, arriving at the far post to convert an excellent cross from Joel Cotterill.

Ginnelly doubled the lead after the break with a composed finish, before turning provider to set up Kuharevich for a tap-in, while substitute Iwan Morgan added a fourth late on.

Nathan Robinson got a late consolation for the Railwaymen as they suffered defeat on their travels.

Ginnelly and Kuharevich played an hour with head coach Michael Duff in attendance, while Nathan Tjoe-A-On played 45 minutes following his recent arrival from Excelsior.

The result gave Anthony Wright’s under-21 side their first league victory of the season, and made it six wins from six at the Swansea.com Stadium over the last 12 months for the age-grade side.

Parker, who had looked an assured presence throughout, then fired just wide of the post with a low left-footed shot after cutting in from the right flank.

With Ginnelly, Kuharevich and Tjoe-A-On all involved, and Evan Watts, Kian Jenkins, Richard Faakye Mitchell Bates, Liam Smith and Maliq Cadogan dropping out of the team that had faced Barnsley in the season opener, there were also starts for Ben Hughes, Ben Blythe and Kai Ludvigsen.

Kuharevich was involved early, twice holding the ball up well to bring others into play; Parker fired high and wide from the edge of the area from the first while Ginnelly flashed a threatening ball across goal from the second.

Ginnelly and Kuharevich nearly combined again in the 14th minute. Azeem Abdulai found Ginnelly on the right and the Ukrainian just could not make proper contact on his driven cross.

But the hosts did take the lead in the 20th minute, a good run by Tjoe-A-On cleared space for skipper Cotterill to swing in a great deep cross, and Parker arrived at the far post to find the net for his first goal for the under-21s.

Ginnelly was proving a constant threat, and he again nearly teed up Kuharevich after being fed into space by Cameron Congreve.

Great driving work from Abdulai in midfield then sent Kuharevich racing towards goal, where the striker cut inside onto his right foot but fired narrowly wide of the far post.

Kuharevich then cleared the crossbar as he raced onto a lovely Ginnelly and Filip Lissah’s ball had found the frontman, before Congreve shot straight at the keeper from Abdulai’s lovely lofted pass.

Crewe had barely threatened but Tjoe-A-On made a terrific last-ditch tackle to prevent Lewis Billington having a run in on goal, and Connor Evans then spurned a gilt-edged chance as he turned Calum Agius’ cross wide from inside the six-yard box.

That miss ensured the Swans remained ahead at the interval, with Tjoe-A-On withdraw in a planned half-time change that saw Liam Smith introduced.

Parker nearly grabbed his second of the game when he was played into space down the right, but Tom Booth in the Crewe goal made a good stop at his near post.

But Swansea did double their lead in the 50th minute when a lovely pass by Congreve found Ginnelly’s run in behind, and the forward calmly steered the ball into the far corner of the net.

The third of the contest arrived eight minutes later. Ginnelly again finding space out wide, and this time he patiently waited for Kuharevich to time his run and picked the Ukrainian out in the middle to finish from close range.

It proved to be the last action for the creator and scorer as they were replaced by Kyrell Wilson and Iwan Morgan respectively.

The substitutes combined neatly with 20 minutes to go, Wilson laying on a fine pass for Morgan in the middle, but the striker’s final effort sailed over the bar.

It then took an outstanding block from Billy Sass-Davies to deny Wilson after he had raced onto Smith's wonderful through ball and rounded the keeper, while there was still time for Morgan to rattle the woodwork.

But the striker would not be denied a goal, and his pressing work allowed him to rob keeper Booth and run the ball into an unguarded net to make it 4-0, before Robinson's last-gasp consolation and he swept home from a Lewis Nolan pass.

I watched the game and Ginnelly looked every bit the experienced hand in the team adding spark. To be fair Liam Smith who replaced 'Joanne' was even sharper.

I have been mightily impressed with him. On for 20 mins he was electric. Fast of mind and feet with the Leon Britton knack of pick-pocketing opponents in contact situations.

Azeem looks a class above this level and patrolled 80% of the pitch as if it belonged to him as a box to box midfielder. If he takes the ball off you he is gone pressing forward into space. He needs to work on hitting the target with shooting.

Lissah is also very impressive. He does not make mistakes and does not look as if there is a mistake in him. I have not seen him tested by a bruiser but he seemed in full control the few times I have watched him. Azeem and Lissah are on the same wavelength carrying on from last season.

Cotterill and Congreve were as it says in the tin reliable and accurate. Congreve tired and was rightly subbed.

'Joanne' was solid defensively reacting sharply when needed. He was getting used to his mates in this game in forward positions. Kukharevich was solid on the ball scored and had one or two other chances. No sign of an power in the air in the few time Swansea went aerial. These types of players are very rare in Wales. Finding his feet in the Swansea style.

Sam Parker was also very confident. He scored the first and had two other shots on goal where squaring might have been better to Ginelly and Kukharecvic. Strong on the ball and accurate.

Bythe and Ludvigsen gave nothing away. Blythe however was the only player who's passing accuracy was sub par. He has not played a lot and it will come.

Morgan came on with Wilson adding pace to the forward line Wilson is very fast. Morgan stepping up was pretty good but could have had a 15 minute hat trick. Scuffed one and hit the post. He is one of these players that seems to be in the right place more often than not. A good skill to have.

Swansea city u21 looks as if they know what they are doing and look like a well drilled unit.
