We rightly don't let animals suffer such a fate, but happily see Humans suffer.

The resource implications are also largely understated. I don't say that assisted dying will never be introduced, but it will take time for opinion in some very influential circles to change and an acceptable way forward to be worked out. In the meantime, we should all press for more resources to go into palliative care, which will continue to be very important whatever happens with assisted dying.

I remember my brother or might have been my Mrs who went to an appointment with the specialist, when he give my mother the diagnoses of her illness and Mother asked how much time she had he give her an estimate and said probably a fer months longer if she was peg fed, I wish she had gone down that route than not to have had to suffer dehydration and starvation. It must have been horrendous for her, she couldn't even tell us, because PSP disease wastes all the bodies muscles. Horrendous.
| Assisting Dying bill on 15:26 - Apr 25 with 471 views | majorraglan | I’m disappointed that the bill hasn’t been successful and become law, but I'm not surprised. It’s my belief that someone who is in command of all their faculties, has a terminal diagnosis and that the prognosis is less than 6 months should be able to opt for assisted dying. It’s not for everyone, but it allows those who want to choose how to end their life to do it. In 2025, a total of 43 Brits travelled to Dignitas, that’s the second highest number ever and an increase on the previous year’s 37. There are around 2,500 Brits registered with Dignitas. Assisted dying (or euthanasia in some places) is legal in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal (awaiting regulation), Spain, Switzerland. In the Americas, it is legal in Canada, Colombia, and 11 jurisdictions in the US (California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and Washington DC.) It’s also legal in Australia and New Zealand. These are hardly backward countries with kangaroo court type legal systems. I cannot believe that we can’t look at the system in each country, take best practice and incorporate it in to legislation in the U.K. We could structure the legislation to ensure that only those who are mentally competent are allowed to apply and that applications are scrutinised by approved professionals for example a judge supported by psychiatric and medical reports. | | | |
