The BBC Wales football commentator has passed away aged 81
Back in the day the massive Bluebird fan could never hide his disappointment when the Swans scored during his commentary on the radio

The irony of him doing the narration of the swans golden years part two video!
I wrote to him as a kid as I quite liked his commentary at the time on Radio Wales, (even though he did sound like a robot lol), & was good enough to write back to me as well.
I know he was a bluebird, but I grew up listening to his commentary, and as OHG says above, it’s all we had back then as I wasn’t allowed to go to games on my own until I was in my late teens.
My dad always called him Richard “away to our left/right” Sheppered.
Him & Ron Jones on radio wales back in the day were the commentators I grew up listening to back in the 80’s. Rugby union match first, & then second half commentary only on the football, & once in about 4/5 weeks it’d be the swans. I’d even record it onto cassette off my radio if we were on!
Good days those, but sad news today.

Some of the oldie broadcaster had ths skills to bring the game to your transistor radio .
TMS are still up there with the best presenter but are now so unable to critise a current Test Player for fear of being barred from post match interviews stick of rhubarb Boycott maybe .
Jason Mohammed is still a presenter I really think grits his teeth on occasions or a big similey face on Final Score .

Richard Shepherd was no more a fan of Cardiff City than he was of Newport County and the Swans and more rather than doing his job as a radio commentator at games of the most successful team in the Principality in the late 60's and 70's where Cardiff City had the monopoly of playing in Europe every season.
Those were dark days following the Swans apart from some sporadic seasons where either the Swans and County had success that was keenly covered by Radio Wales in the Tosh era or when County had a great run in the European Cup Winners Cup.
Richard was a great ambassador of Welsh football as were his books covering professional football club in South Wales.

He was most definitely a Bluebird and any Cardiff fan will tell you that - he collected memorabilia, edited the matchday programme for years and was their official club historian. The comments over on MM's CCMB about his passing would suggest he was definitely one of their own.
Nothing wrong with who his favourite/boyhood team was. He was an old school football reporter so would have kept a degree of balance, Not like Abbandanato and Mohammed who just can't help themselves. |  |

My apologies on a thread like this but Richard was 100% a Bluebird he was the editor of the club programme and after his retirement at the BBC worked at Cardiff City up until 2018
