Swansea City : The summer ahead under Vitor Matos - Report Wednesday, 13th May 2026 14:36 by Keith Haynes Swansea City head coach, Vitor Matos will be right on the ball when his squad returns to pre season training next month. Not least a different take on what has been the norm over the past few seasons. This time around we will see Swans players being put through intense cardiovascular endurance as the catalyst for a multi training approach to the new season. Matos is keen to see his desire for total dominance of positional play translated into what he calls ‘organisational chaos’ This means his players won’t be rigid in their strategy and react to what the opposition does, but able to manage each situation themselves. This by way of their own responsibility to chaotic moments within a game. That alongside an extreme press initiative, especially in forward areas which is proven to enable turnovers of possession quickly. We have seen this work at times during Vitor’s short time at Swansea. At the completion of the 2025/26 season he had been with the club for just over five months. In that time an abundance of coaches were appointed which saw Ryan Maye and Martyn Margetson leaving due to a lack of coaching time within their specialism. This of course will free up two salaries as well as Joe Allen who also left, his reasoning being he was never going to be involved long term. Leon Britton for now remains. Vitor will always react to his opposition in pre match training but not to the detriment of his own in game methodology. Every game brings different challenges but with an emphasis on his own style the belief is his team will counter any danger with their own playing style. This will be the end game for this summer. It is expected that dominant positional play will improve dramatically compared to the start of last summers pre season friendlies. This will be consolidated by improving build-up play from the back and increasing movement behind opposition lines. This has been a slow drip integration since Matos took over, but we have seen it work. This allows forward players to interact with each other, switching roles and creating movement which concentrates the minds of the opposition. The Swans midfield will be allowed to press via their wide players and wing backs which floods the midfield in an intense attacking style. As Vitor has stated recently, “This is the mindset that I want, and a mindset our players want as well. We want to build a culture here, and if we want to build a culture you have to build it with the right values. For me, the right value in sport is the need to compete and make the most of every game. You need to squeeze everything out of every opportunity you have. We do not want to accept walking through the rest of the season as if it is done. We will not accept that because this club, and this badge, deserves one hundred per cent commitment to winning. That commitment needs to be there in every single game and every single situation. That is the character we want. For that, we need to attack these games. Every single game, whether there are eight to go, or just one” His initial experience came as elite development coach at Liverpool. The endurance of players having been the catalyst for Vitor’s philosophy should create a quicker and intensely reactive Swansea City bringing pace and aggression to their attack. These are ideal scenarios which via Vitor’s strategy will improve those games which are lost by the odd goal which has been a feature for the past two seasons, maybe even more. This is why the immediate return tests where internal body tests will immediately indicate the players adherence to their nutrition plans will be measured. This incorporates physiological testing and endurance to short and sharp physical exercise. There is a training camp planned but despite reports that isn’t sealed as yet. What we do know is there will be at least one friendly linked into recent transfers and if that is achieved we should expect this training camp to be in Austria as reported. We have spoken to people who help this website with information and they understand this training camp will be intense and will implement the new learning the players have gone through. The strategy this summer is all about immediate application of Vitor’s mindset to prepare his squad for a long and testing season. The Swans have had indifferent to poor starts in recent seasons, this ‘effective’ regime starts on day one with the head coach looking for day on day improvement. This will most certainly form his judgement on his immediate squad selection come the new season. If the required improvements are seen compared to matches last season it is believed a stronger and fitter Swansea City will be seen immediately the season starts. We will see but with Vitor Matos and his very in-depth plans for the summer the on field assets have a better chance than not of vast improvement. We are currently working on new investment for the club and if this doesn’t affect those interested parties or Swansea City we will report on that as the summer progresses.
