Jofra Archer has been named in the squad, and rightly so. He offers genuine pace and he’s still relatively unknown to the other teams. I don’t agree with the omission of David Willey though. I wouldn’t have had Liam Dawson. But hey ho.

This is the first round robin CWC since Australia/New Zealand in 1992. For me, that was the best CWC. Australia were big favourites, but lost their first four games. England are big favourites for this one. Let’s hope we get off to a better start.

Come on England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.

The rules were set by the ICC months before the tournament and agreed to by everyone. The Aussies are under the impression as it was at Lords we made them up that afternoon.

exactly this - it wasn't like the Kiwis didn't know what they needed to do and only ran one on that final ball was it

they played the pitch delicately backing themselves to bowl to the target. Needing the extra run in the super over was just the consequence of their approach

Found this online. It wasn’t just the Aussies, everybody was against us. No surprise there really.

I've seen this 'it should have been a draw' nonsense elsewhere.
Ask any person out of either dressing room (or any fan) if they would share the trophy or have a the play-off super over to risk losing it -*every single one* will take the risk losing it. Because otherwise, there's that asterisk forever. You won it, but you didn't. Absolute tosh.

Bare bones.

It's not like goal difference though is it? Nobody would play any differently in case the game went to a super over and was a draw even after the super over? It's not what you would do. It couldn't happen. I should think that they'll change the rule and rightly so - play another super over and keep doing that until someone wins. However, as it stands we won and I don't understand why anyone would lose sleep over that - it wasn't us that made the rules.

Slightly surprised that Latham hasn't had much of a mention. He never gave up when NZ fell apart in the group game, and he never gave up in the final. It was he who managed to hang around and score fairly briskly to give them a chance of victory. He's almost certainly going to be their next captain and we haven't heard the last of him.

Thing is they’ll change the rules and it’ll probably never happen again. Ties in cricket are very unusual to start with and then for them to tie the Super Over 15-15, you couldn’t make it up. It was a freak game.

I do agree that using number of boundaries is a crap way to decide a world cup but they have to decide it somehow. I think England would have won in most of the alternative systems I’ve heard mentioned so reckon the best team won.

There's three other ways you could possibly have settled it fairer.
fewest wickets lost, would have meant New Zealand had advantage in super over.
result between the two teams in league stage of tournament would have meant England retained advantage.
team who finished higher in the table, again England.

so in 3 out of 4 possible scenarios England would have had advantage in result of a tie.

and just on more fact I've read, if you want to go for total runs scored in the whole tournament, England would beat New Zealand by over a thousand!

England wouldn't have lost more wickets if that had been the criteria.

Neither of the run outs would have happened as they would have known that would lose the Cup. Therefore, the "sucicidal" second runs wouldn't have been taken.

Of course, in the super over England scored 15/0 & New Zealand 15/1. Again, NZ wouldn't have attempted the second run if they hadn't known it was required to win.

I know the replays would have shown that England had scored a six, but I thought the sportsmanship of the NZ player in signalling a six when his team mate caught the ball & stepped on the boundary was admirable.

A truly dramatic game!

I was at the landmark hotel this morning, sat having a coffee and Plunkett sits down on table next to me. On way out i met stokes root and rashid, all stopped for photos except rashid. Got a bit star struck and instead of saying well done to root i said good luck 🤦🏼‍♂️ Vince seemed a nice guy too

There are no words to describe the NZ team (and I'm not just saying this as gallant winners). Massive talent and teamwork aside, the sportsmanship shown by both sides in this final brings a lump to the throat, really. Richardson and your comrades take a bow, you've lit a beacon on how things should be.

As you know, he's an R - and probably £200K richer plus possibly an MBE!

When the All Blacks drew with the Lions it was such a let down.

England won on the day and we move on.

No ill will over here, if the roles were reversed we would have gladly taken the win.

That is sport.

Brilliant post.

Notable that the English aren't gloating either. Everyone I've spoken to, read, or heard has immense sympathy (and empathy) for the Kiwis. We know we had great luck at the right times, but we also know, as do the Kiwis, that this was a fiercely and fairly contested match between two sides with the utmost respect for each other. No one should have lost, but one team had to.

The Aussies, with their increasingly risible 'whingeing poms' schtick (there only seems to be one group that whinges these days), their recent history of, you know, *actual* cheating (and let's not forget - at the time the general view was Warner would certainly never play for them again and Smith would be lucky to play for them again - something thrown out the window the moment they realised they needed him back - pathetic) and now these pathetic attempts to take the gloss of a fabulous game of cricket, are nowhere close to being the credit to the sport that the Kiwis are. Everywhere else in the cricket world simply exults in a phenomenal contest. The Aussies whinge like mad. As if it's even anything to do with them!

As Morgan said in an interview above - he loves how the Kiwis showed under McCullum that you can play in the right way, the right spirit, with attacking intent and be good humans too. That's how McCullum led, it's how Williamson leads and it's how Morgan leads too.

Yes it wasn't hard to work out where Morgan was directing his comments.
