Sandanista for me, the diversification on that album is something else. Triple LP for a price of a single, which trumped London Calling, which in itself was an absolute masterpiece. Oh as a 13 year old listening to that album for the first time, trying to remember the lyrics of each song, recording onto a C60 cassette only to find that it wouldn't fit. Had to resort to a C120 in the end.

London Calling (my favourite) - Band wanted to make a double album but sell it for the price of a single album. Record company said No. Band said, can we give away a free 12” EP instead and charge for a single album. Record company agreed. Except once EP contained 9 tracks and the rpm was switched from 45 to 33 last minute, thus ended up a double album. Record company furious.
Band response was to make a Triple album which sold for the price of a Double, but having bitten before, the record company ensured Band would make no money from Sandinista, which I agree has some excellent songs within it, but they don’t fill 6 sides.

Clash pledged to release a single each month in 1980. This was aborted by the record company after Bankrobber in January. I see Sandinista as the Band fulfilling their pledge but in album form.
Much like Bankrobber, which featured Single, Dub version & an experimental track, so Sandinista has 36 tracks. One could make a good case for 12 strong singles, a similar number of Dubs & Versions and about a dozen experimental tracks. Not all of which worked. Mensforrh Hill, Shepherds Delight, Career Opportunities sung by Blockheads children....
For me it would have made a brilliant single album, but what do I know.....?

Ha Ha.
Now I like XTC, but even they said they were the band that even their fans didn’t want everyone else to know how good they were.....Just our little secret !
Great documentary too. Dear God is genius IMO.
