And well worth the £15 for the ticket. Two teams that wanted to play football the right way and plenty of chances on both sides. If this is pretty much our second string then we are going to have some fun this season. For Saturday I would have Chair in for Scowen and maybe Smith for Amos. Warburton has certainly got a group of players that want to win and play for each other.

Was great to see Wells back at his best, Manning is looking better and better at left back. First time I’ve seen Ball and he looks solid enough, firstly playing on the right of a defensive three and then at right back. The only player I wasn’t sure about was Kelly. Thought he should have got the free kick although had no chance with their other two goals. Forget about the scoreline, this was no dress rehearsal for Saturday unless both teams do decide to go hell for leather, but if they did then it will be one hell of a game.

Great to see but more fans need to turn up. No doubt QPR suffered a loss tonight in revenues.

I loved that. Wonderful night of football.
Disappointed at the lack of people there, disappointed at the lack of reaction on here. Diane Abbot/Boris Johnson says something stupid we're fcking besieged with threads... QPR played an actual game tonight, won, on penalties, great entertainment. Message board shrugs and moves onto its next angry man shouts at cloud irrelevance.

Yes the game on show deserved more of a crowd.
When it kicked off I thought this feels like a pre season friendly at Harrow Boro.
It seemed to me that it was 8 different players in but playing exactly like we did on Saturday
BFG grew in to it after looking a bit shaky. Kelly needs to be more commanding but a lot to like and both sides scored good goals.
This is what going to the rangers should be about.

Breath of fresh air. We look like we’ve finally done what we’ve been saying for the last four or five years that we’d done. It seems the revolutionary approach may be far more effective than evolution. I know it’s very early days but the concern about integrating so many players may have been unfounded.

I thought Manning, until he tired, was outstanding, as was Chair. Ball looked very good to me. Not really a poor performance amongst them. And Warburton just seems the perfect fit to me. Speaks sense, doesn’t talk the b0llox the ‘football people’ talk, straight to the point.

Cautiously optimistic this actually may not be another false dawn.

Poll: Expectations for this season?

I thought that was one of the best games of football I've watched in a long time. Two sides both wanting to win. I feel sorry for Bristol, because there was really nothing between the two teams. They scored three great goals and there was nothing Kelly could do about any of them. We got two good goals and deserved to equalise, even though it was from the spot.

The foul for the penalty looked a bit soft, but the previous foul on Manning near the edge of the box really should have been, so I think it's fair in the end. I know refs say they don't even things up, but that looked like it to me.

I thought all the new players looked okay.

Kelly couldn't help the goals, but I think he could have come out and claimed the ball more.

Kane and Ball were both solid at the back, as was Barbet again.

Smith and Pugh were tidy and in control.

Scowen had a much better game than Saturday.

Good to see Leistner back. If we have a player, then we need to use them (even if it's with an eye to moving them on later).

Nakhi played well, back to the player at his best last season. He even scored a penalty...

Chair and Manning were fantastic together down their side. I suspect the Bristol players will have nightmares, especially knowing it could happen again on Saturday, if Warburton doesn't change the team to confuse them.

We genuinely seem to have cover in every position. Warburton appears to have done a good job with his summer. We know how we play and can swap a large chunk of the team against decent opposition and still play the same way.

All positive so far.

Really enjoyable evening.

Thought Warburton got the selection spot on and good to see us play at a decent tempo from the first whistle.

Too many early cup exits over the last 20 years seems to have taken its toll on our crowd for early rounds but those who stayed away missed a treat tonight.

Kelly couldn't do much about the Bristol City goals which were all well taken. Their 2nd and 3rd goals were superb strikes.

We lined up in a 5 - 3 - 2 formation 1st half when City were attacking us and Kane impressed again after his cameo on Saturday. He made endless attacking runs in the first half and was constantly looking to play a one two and push down the wing. Best attacking right back we've had since Kyle Walker on loan? Early days but looks a fine player. Put in a few wicked crosses.

The crisp pass and move game that Warburton is looking for carried on from the first two games of the season and Manning and Barbet had good games. Barbet could barely run at the end so clearly needed another 90 mins. Knew he was going to miss his pen.

Toni played the whole game and had his hands full with their number 9 but apart from a late lunges and misplaced passes did his job. The passing game comes as natural to Toni as it did for Wimbledon in the 80's although he did refrain from lumping it tonight. Most of the time.

Ball was solid enough and looked a bit rusty since I saw him at Oxford.

Scowen did his usual ratting and breaking up play in midfield after almost having his head taken off at point blank range by a ball smashed at him. Looks a little short on confidence in the 3 games so far this season but has started every game so may keep his starting place for Saturday.

Matt Smith 2.0 looked lively and linked up well with Big Daddy Kane. When fully fit may keep Scowen out of the starting 11. Tidy player.

Pugh is another tidy player who needs game time and got an hour tonight. Was blowing out of his arse but liked what I saw after his cameo at Stoke.

Chair was MOM for me. Our most creative player on the pitch. Dangerous whenever he got the ball and always looking for it. Great to see him get a goal and got to be in contention for a league start soon. Possibly at home against Wigan but would be happy to see him start on Saturday.

Wells looks confident and took his goal superbly hitting it first time to level things up a few minutes after City's opener. Fantastic to see him score his pen.

Mlakar and Amos did ok when they came on. Charlie Owens got 15 minutes.

Atmosphere was good in South Africa Road during 2nd half. Hopefully see a packed away end on Saturday and a decent crowd for the Wigan and Swansea games.

Well done Mark Warburton. Cracking cup tie and he has a few selection headaches already which is testament to the squad he has put together in a very short space of time.

Good to see some of our squad watching in the Directors Box - Eze, Hall, Hugill, Cameron and others spotted laughing and joking before kick off. Team spirit seems excellent.

Thanks for the just back!

I had zero expectations for the season and it feels like I’ve been going down the Rangers more out of duty for a long time and certainly for factors other than the football.

I do hope this positivity continues.

We don’t half deserve a bit of sexy football us lot.

I’m off on my hols now for a couple of weeks. Can you all please do your best not to brake things!

Was sat in the bar on my last night in Rhodes watching the scores update on my phone, really is surreal having a feeling that we can actually win a cup game.
Just seen the highlights and no way can you blame Kelly for not getting that free kick.

Sorry but I won’t take any criticism of a low crowd

Yep, hearing about it means I’d of quite fancied being there but I’m not gutted to miss it due to my resilience in deciding to take the same approach to these games as QPR have over the years.
Fair play to those who went and really glad it was a good watch.

As I posted on the match thread, I gave it a swerve thinking it'd be a typical Rangers second string 1-0 defeat and am eating humble pie as a result. Will definitely be going to the Pompey game.

Last season's mini FA Cup run was quite fun as well. A cracker of a match against Leeds; a good day out at Portsmouth; a win at HQ for the return leg and a creditable performance against Watford that we could and really should have won. That kind of convinced me to go last night and I'm glad I did.

I think Warburton is a proper student of the game. He will have done his homework and known about last year's debacle against Blackpool and the backlash against McLaren. The fact he had the first teamers who weren't playing turning up to watch says a lot. How fantastic to have a manager who isn't a wally!

Agreed re: crowd. The club have made their own bed with their approach to Cup games in the past (last season being an exception). For those of us living outside of London and finishing work at 6pm the logistics of getting to the game on time aren't always simple.

That said, I would expect a far bigger attendance v Pompey given that Warburton is taking the same approach to Cup games as he is to league games. And yes, watching the scoreline at home on my phone I regret not making the effort.

"Thank you for supporting Queens Park Rangers Steep Staircase"... and I thought I'd signed up for a rollercoaster.

Hard to think of a better evenings entertainment that could be had for a tenner. really enjoyed that and although it was a low crowd the atmosphere was very positive.

For the last few years i have found myself coming away from games feeling quite stressed- and it seemed to me last night watching a team comfortable in possession is so much more pleasurable- even when conceding three.

Don't want to post any negatives after that evening- cup football can be an entertaining release from worrying about the league and the game on Saturday may have contributed to both sides playing with freedom last night.

Manning looks all there though doesn't he.

I think that was a higher crowd than we have had for the first round for quite a while.

I didn't go & it will probably be the same for the Portsmouth match. Midweek games are a real pain to attend, but I do make the league matches. So, I will be there next Wednesday & looking forward to it. I would admit to being jealous of those that were there though!

I find it very exciting that we have a twenty two man first team squad & that we will attempt to play football no matter who is playing. Pre-season I stated that I was feeling more optimistic than any season since 1984. Long may that continue.

Manning, Amos, Smith, BOS, Shodipo, Eze & Chair showing that youth is the way forward, backed up with hard working experienced players! Rather like it was between the mid sixties & the mid seventies, also 1979 to the departure of Venables!

Have Kane & Chair forced themselves into the starting eleven for Saturday?

It is hard to argue with the comments about the low attendance. As a club we have brought that on with our attitude to the Cups. However, given the start we have made and the host of new signings on show I thought there might have been a few more there.

I thought it was a great game of football and although biased I thought we looked the better side overall and deserved the win.

5,800 one of the biggest crowds of the night. Given the status of this cup these days and the clubs almost total disinterest for 20 years, that’s not a bad turn out.

Wish we had been there, my son mentioned he’s never seen us in or win a penalty shoot out, but I think most of us were struggling to get our heads around the idea we at last have a competitive second string.

100% agree with this...

I said a few seasons ago (after losing to swindon or McDons or someone else similar) that I would never do another League Cup game. I think alot still have the mindset that its going to be a waste of time and money.
However it looks like things are changing? I'm really impressed with the 'just back' reports given the second string nature of the team.
I will be at the Pompey game!

What a superb match - our reaction to conceding was to take the game to the opposition - as we did all match, instead of fading. We would never have made penalties last season. 15 goals last night. Fantastic team attitude.

I find it interesting that you are all complaining about the crowd. However I would have to say that those here complaining were either not there or were sitting at the higher letter Blocks. I was in B and felt that the club should have actually been congratulated in moving those from X accross to A. The atmosphere through the constant singing from those in A was something that has not been heard from from any of these "compressed crowd" early cup clashes for some time. So, while you can complain about the overall size of the crowd, for once the club did the right thing and I think it paid off well. Of course when they sang "1 nil and you f'd it up", I knew that would come back to sting them. There was some good banter, including singing about the guy in the suit. Personally, I hope the interest for Portsmouth is a whole lot better as I want to get back to my seat in Ellerslie instead of the crap seat that some poor bugger has to pay the same amount as me and has a significantly restricted view.

I was so happy for Wells, who has received so much grief for his second half of the season performance earlier this year. I think he will really enjoy the system that MW is playing and now has completely different team mates around him. He scored the first, help set up the second and took the fall for the third. Yes, he scored a penalty as well, but at the other end to those he missed. On that, I was intrigued to see the end chosen, that being the end where the away fans were sitting. Not much home ground advantage there.

As others have said, this was such an exciting game to watch for the home fans, for the Bristol fans and for the neutrals.

Wells also had a cracking shot which hit the bar in the second half; think the keeper may well have got a touch on it from where I was sitting.
