Hypothetical question but.. 09:26 - Sep 4 with 5730 viewsRblockPrior

If and it is a massive if we are around the playoffs come January do you think we will take a punt and try to spend a little? Now I know we haven't got a lot, however I just wonder if we would dip into any of the budget we would have set aside for the next summer window to give us a chance of play offs.

Poll: Of the 3 linked away, who do you think will still be a QPR player come February?

Would depend on injuries.

But if we are in or around the playoffs half way through then it means the current squad is good enough. Leave them alone if all fit.

Smells like a trout farm in here

The huge summer clear out has actually left us with *some* FFP headroom for January and next summer I'm told - hence the £3m bid for the Aberdeen lad.

Well let’s get spending like muddafookin depraved crack addicts who’ve won the lottery then!

We could sign Remy, but would he be available for the playoffs?

No need, Shiloh plays for our under 23s.

Isn't the "one in, one out" rule with the incoming player on no more than 60% of the outgoing players salary still in effect?

I think that was for January 2019 only. Just the one transfer window embargo.

There is definitely room for a top class centre back

Always.
Might have to settle for a next class under the top class CB though, as suspect Toby Alderweireld won't fancy the move ;)

Bare bones.

Didn't Warbs refuse to do just that at Brentford?

We wont be anywhere near, but even if we were or weren't i think all i would want is one CB as we do just look weak at the back at the moment.

Can you name 6 teams who are definitely better than us - 3 maybe but 6? I don’t think this is a particularly strong championship this season. Sheffield Wednesday are supposed to be one of the fancied teams. Really?

To be fair Clive when I posted that last year I was wildly derided on here, but at one point it looked nailed on.

I know we have only had six games but it has been against an even spread of teams, three at the bottom and three at the top end (well Wednesday were there until we arrived). 8th place currently does indicate that we could be there or there abouts and the two defeats, especially against Swansea was unlucky and with a bit more luck and care we could have rolled home. I’m very optimistic about this season, the team looks to be getting better and better and there is certainly goals in the team.

Yes i think he did and one of the reasons he departed if memory serves.

If we’re in playoff contention in Jan, we should sell Eze for an inflated figure and use the money to buy a couple of good quality upper championship ready centre backs and make Hughill permanent. Hughill, Wells, Chair, BOS (and Shodipo from the bench) will be just fine to keep the promotion party on track with two solid CB’s behind them.

You state the positives DW but the negatives are around the defence.

I believe that Warburton wants to play a 4231 with width from midfield as well as fullback. However, when we do play this way we are vulnerable through the centre. When we switch to a 325 we look a bit more solid in this area, can play two strikers but we have to sacrifice the wingers. We still have to settle which style suits us best or maybe we want to be flexible and switch between the two.

We have gone behind in the last seven league and cup games. This cannot continue. I seem to remember us doing something similar last season and then came Hull at home. The start of a slide into a very poor run of form.

I think that this is a much better squad and realistic and flexible manager, so that sort of descent should be avoidable but we can't keep coming from behind.

If we sell Les to Newcastle for a fückton of money and then use the money wisely we could....

I would not spend another penny on players this season unless it was the case that we had suffered some long term injuries and needed championship level cover to make sure we do not slip in to a relegation fight. It seems we have a little war chest due to the sensible handling of the squad this summer.

If in the event we were in the playoffs in Jan then I would still say "so what".

If by some miracle and, in a HIGHLY unlikely, fantasy world, our football with the existing squad was then still so good we went up, that would be where the real problems would begin.

Would Hoos be able to keep the owners from going mental in the sweet shop again, would there be a parting of the ways as he realised that his work was done, or was about to be undone, or would he be strong enough to keep the purse stings tight - even if it meant that we went straight back down again.

Could we as fans cope for the sake of the longer term financial security that we took the money but banked it so that life in the Championship would be better longer term and we got hammered every week for a season, but came back down with pretty much the same squad intact which meant we could compete over the coming years on a financially stable footing playing good football?

I don't think we could.

Yes that's what LBlock said the year before. And whoever it was the year before that. And so on. Every year, it's part of the message board make up now.

Other stalwart threads:
- My season ticket hasn't arrived should I be worried (three weeks before first home game usually)
- the first must win game of the season. (can come at any time though a couple of seasons ago actually referred to the first match in August)
- why haven't we done any business yet, other clubs are signing players. (May-June)
- we desperately need to sign a striker (May-August, rarely quelled by the signing of an actual striker)

I think Warburton has demonstrated that he can be trusted more than super Ray in the transfer market! To be fair, up until Ray bought a bunch of magic beans and an extraordinarily versatile egg at the market for £6m, the buy cheap/sell high philosophy had worked quite well - eg; Seaman, Parker, Sinton, Peacock.
