Everyone everywhere is recommending it!

It wasn’t for me though, over 3 hours and I lost interest as it wasn’t a subject I’m interested in tbh but then again I didn’t like ‘once upon a time in Hollywood’ so what do I know

Enjoy

An absolute masterpiece from a genius of a director. Superb script, acting and direction! Watch it!

My lad watched it at the weekend he said it was very good but not quite in the mold of 'Goodfellas' or 'Once Upon A Time In America'.
Any film with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci in it has just got to be worth watching surely? I doubt you'll see these three superb actors together again in a film.

‘I heard you paint houses.’

Hears a scene from 'Heat' with De Niro and Pacino superbly acting each other to death, there acting and timing is 10 outta 10.

Long, drags in the middle, but yes very good if you like that kind of thing. I thought of it as four parts: First, self referential pastiche for the fans, excellently accomplished. Second, got a bit dull. Third, excellent build up and tension with humour, a deft touch. Fourth, painful summation of what a life means.

I rated it good. Very long. I waited till Netflix and split it over two nights which Scorsese said is a no no. He says one take and big screen if possible

Heat is a great movie and it includes one of my favorite scenes and lines from Pacino when he throws the tv out into the street ."you can eat my food and fu*k my wife but you are not going to watch my tv " or something close to that .
Most of the complaints about The Irishman are concerning the lack of killing as well as the length.I have not seen it myself but now that its on Netflix its only a matter of time until I settle in and watch it

Good film, ticked many boxes for me. Although one scene really brought home how much De niro has aged.

I didn't like it and felt like I'd wasted three hours of my life.

If you like those type of films you'll like it as it's a quintessential American gangster film.

Joe Pesci was excellent, stand out performance. Harvey Kietel was also really good in his brief appearance and brought a sense of presences in his performance that De Niro and Pacino couldn't.

Dull, one note, drag of a film rehashing the same material we've now seen many times before with deathly slow pacing, thin plot and drab two dimensional characters having the same conversation over and over again.

The last 45 minutes is frankly a p**stake it's so boring and self indulgent.

It's only because it's got Scorsese's name on it that anyone is giving it the time of day.

Thanks for the reviews. Ended up watching it last night and glad I did because it's a good film.

Spoliers_______

Not sure I'd go much further than 'good', though. It's well shot as you'd expect and Pesci, De Niro and Kietel all act superbly, as you'd expect. But it has problems, to my mind.

First, the plot is thin - once it moves away from the rise of Sheeran we're left only with the question of whether Hoffa will disappear or not, and we know that already.

Second is Pacino as Hoffa or Pacino as latter-day Pacino, to be more accurate. It's the same character now since Scent of a Woman, the same noises, the same insane shouting, the same pauses, the same head movements. And it would be all of those even if he was asked to play Gandhi. Dreadful.

The third is the CGI. It's just comical. You have actors with unconvincing and frankly weird young faces on old bodies that are moving like old bodies. It takes away from the film. A younger Scorsese would have found younger actors to play young Sheeran and young Russell.

Still, a solid 7/10. Ryan Nelson but no Richard Dunne.

I liked it but partly out of nostalgia

I think it would have been better with younger actors in the De Niro and Pacino parts. De Niro when de-aged looks like a young head on an old body and there is one scene early on at the grocers where his age really shows. His character needs to be a frightening thug but he looks like he could not chase you up the stairs. Pacino is playing Hoffa in his 40s and 50s and it does not come off at all.

Pesci however is fantastic and steals every scene he is in. I didn't mind the length although there are a few extraneous plots that could easily have been cut with no loss.

It is nowhere near as good as Goodfellas but maybe on a par with Casino which is not bad going.

At the end of the credits there is a 30 minute chat between the three actors and Scorsese and they all look like they need a nurse to cut up the dinner for them so they did well to make the thing!

No idea about the Irishman but if its still on at Chrimbles I'll probably give it a go?

Sorry to hijack the thread But what did everyone think of 'Once upon a time in Hollywood'? I didn't like it but appreciated the nostalgia and the nod to old Hollywood etc.

The Irishman - pretty good but massively overhyped which is understandable given the Director and the actors involved. Doesn't quite reach the heights of Goodfellows, Casino or Donnie Brasco IMO. Having watched the whole film in one go, I havnt come away with any instantly memorable scenes like you do in those other three movies.

Haven't seen it yet, Thame.

Tarantino hasn't done it for me for a long time. Just too overblown and indulgent. I always watch his films at some stage, though, as the talent will shine through here and there and make worth the effort.

Thought it was great.

Only two criticisms I had is that De Niro looked about as Irish as the lead baton twirler at the head of a Orange order parade, and when he played the younger version of himself he looked like he’d used an embalmer not a make up artist 😆

I enjoyed it. 6 or 7 out of 10.
Good historical attachments.
Rehash of a lot of stuff from over the years.
Typical finish.
Some of the younger men flashbacks a bit comical.

yeah, but did you like it?

I will watch it (over 2 nights - want me to watch it one night, Marty, make it no more than 2 hours - if you can't make it 2 hours, you're not doing it right mate), but to be honest, it's been a long time since I've really liked a new Scorsese.

Bare bones.

Funny innit? I thought this was the most overrated scene in cinema history and got by almost solely in who the actors were, not what they were doing. A good scene, don't get me wrong, but no more than that, and the entire film to me was too concerned with style. Not a fan, but can see why others like it.

Bare bones.

I watched three movies last week: "Parasite," "Free Solo" (overdue, I know), and "The Irishman."

Two of them were compelling. One felt like an obligation.

That said, I agree wholeheartedly with the earlier shout on Pesci and Keitel, and I'd still call "The Irishman" worth one watch.

all about opinions I suppose? ... but I absolutely loved HEAT.
I loved the complexity of the characters, its gritty non-glamourized view of criminality.
I loved the human stories of the crims, the relationships between the main characters, day to day life carrying on as normal despite their activities. The epic 'one last job' and the aftermath was really powerful. I also thought that Pacino’s character (a cop) was also brilliant in the way you ended up hating him and rooting for the 'bad' guys... Superb Film (IMHO).

absolutely mate - each to their own - and maybe if i watched again i'd come down on yoiur side. Was only about 20 when i watched it and just remember being annoyed by it, but I've never hugely liked Mann, but can understand why he has his big afficianadoes!

Bare bones.
