Marcus Rashford on 15:10 - Jun 16 with 1370 views | kensalriser | I'd add that even despite our best efforts over the last decade or so, the UK is still one of the wealthiest countries in the world. No child should be going hungry.

Absolutely. Think of it as an investment even if you (not you) are someone who doesn’t just think it’s a good idea because kids in 2020 shouldn’t be malnourished through no fault of their own. I’m sure we can all think of our own examples of government spending wasted. This ain’t it.

We literally have no government do we, they are so clueless it's unreal. I'm glad they're willing to make u-turns but how out of touch are they, it's extremely worrying.

To be fair PP if half the kids who get it don't actually need it as urgently as perhaps the scheme requires then I'm happy that the other half, that are in desperate need, do get it. It will be a necessary part of the cost having that overlap. As qprd said above I wasn't aware of this situation and its shocking tbh (the situation and my ignorance), shows how comfortable I've been all my life despite bemoaning the fact I'm not as well off as many of my peers. I know everyone thinks MPs are slags (or knuts to borrow someone else's term) , but quite a few of the London ones used to bring their needy constituents into Parliament on a regular basis to get them and their kids fed. This was never broadcast publically because it could be construed as misuse of expenses ironically. I’ve seen some horrendous individual stories. [Post edited 16 Jun 2020 16:22]

I get what your saying Karl but you just know there are people who milk the system and do a bloody good job of it and they will be all over this Happy that It helps poor kids, single parent families , or a mum/dad who is doing 3 jobs to put food on the table etc , etc

Yes, wasn't a put down to you PP, just an observation. I think we don't have this problem in Orkney but the figures quoted in the articles are huge and you feel there has to be an element of it.
Marcus Rashford on 16:57 - Jun 16 with 1136 views | A40Bosh | My Mrs works in a secondary school in a pastoral role. Some nights she would come home during the last 5 years unable to speak without getting upset over what she is exposed to on what goes on in some families just to try and put some food on the table. There are a lot of children in this country who have horrific childhoods and much of it stems from generations of the family unable to break out of the poverty trap. Yes there are some people who will try and milk the system but I would not begrudge some money going wrongly astray to ensure that the majority of those who do deserve get it A mate of mine is a primary head in Brent and he was spending a lot of time trying to convince some of the kids to come in during the early days who were not key worker children to still come in because of what they were facing at home and so he could feed them during the day.

most benefit fraud is in housing benefits. I doubt very much that much of this will be wasted, a teensy tiny fraction not really worth worrying about. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2017-39980793

You must be interested in the future if not the past so is it Labour policy to bring in free meals during school holidays in the future (post virus). Surely it must be. [Post edited 16 Jun 2020 20:16]

I’m not really up for this debate to be honest because we know it’ll lead to the thread getting shut down, but yeah it is Labour policy and was prior to the shut down.

Why is that relevant , million weren't on furlough then and earning 20% less money.

Millions were not on furlough then and earning 20% less money as you correctly point out but that does not change the fact a great deal of children were getting free school dinners. Surely while they were in power the Labour Party would have introduced free school meals during school holidays for those children. I just wondered why they did not.

I have no idea you tell me. I have not mentioned Marcus Rashford in any post. If you look back a few post you will see a tweet from the Labour Party congratulating themselves so I just wondered when they had had the chance they did not introduce 52 weeks a year free meals. I imagine you have misunderstood. If a free hot meal is necessary for a child now and it is it has always been. The numbers are irrelevant. [Post edited 16 Jun 2020 22:23]
