Apparently the heat did for it and the cast iron has shattered- no one allowed to go near it or under it as at risk of imminent collapse

Hammersmith Bridge on 11:33 - Nov 22 by Boston

A couple of points to consider from my construction viewpoint...

There are numerous examples of fading infrastructure in the US, the worst of them concentrated in the States which would endorse large government.

Obsession with small government? That would be the greater power of the local voters to stop authorities spending taxpayer money. A good infrastructure example would be Britain's HS2 project, which from what I've gathered, is considered to be a complete waste of money by the majority of the population but on it goes regardless.

I don't have a view on HS2, because I get what both sides are trying to do but don't know if the benefits outweigh the damage. I'd have to get a good knowledge of wildly different subjects - off top of my head: engineering, transport, macro-economics, wildlife conservation and climate change.

And I bet 99% of the public is no better informed, so I don't think "the majority of the population" thinking it "a complete waste of money" counts for f*ck all frankly.

I agree that locals usually know what money should be spent on better than big government but letting local voters decide national projects makes no sense - of course no-one in Bucks is going to vote for a railway through their favourite woods so that Brummies can get a job.

Hammersmith Bridge on 08:41 - Aug 15 by stevec

Morandi Bridge, Genoa.

Collapsed 14 Aug 2018
Complete rebuild completed 22 June 2020.

Worked day and night on it apparently, apart from Christmas Day.

Meanwhile, back in the UK, experts still having a ‘good look‘ at Hammersmith Bridge.

Experts or consultants as we call them now are on about £20 grand a day so they won’t be in any hurry

Strong and stable my arse.

A solution and the Council don’t want to know.

H&F council have unveiled plans, endorsed by Richmond council, for a double decker crossing that would be built within, but not actually part of, the existing bridge. This would allow the old bridge to be removed in sections, renewed off site and replaced. These proposals go to the Dept. of Transport soon. Looks pretty hopeful.
