Including real people in the stands! Can't see any of last year's also-rans moving up into contention this year. With a less taxing schedule than last season and better luck with injuries (possibly), I'm tipping the Raiders this year.

Penrith handing out another punishment beating. Cronulla took five plays to get 14m off their line.

Saw a Tweet from an actual RL magazine account panning women's super league, because it had been a weekend of blow outs. Looking forward to similar write offs of the NRL as it starts the weekend with back to back 50-0s.

Eels for me tonight, even the Chooks can't keep losing first-teamers and still win.

They are something else aren’t they? Bellamy is as good a coach as Ive ever seen, he just continues to take rough diamonds and turns them into, at worst, really solid professionals and at best, superstars. I wonder if there could be some sort of connection made between the R’s coaching staff and the Storms? That’s the system to replicate

Melbourne are a great, well drilled team. Even with the stars they've lost to retirement.

Souths had key players (especially Reynolds) out but no excuse for losing by 50. Hard to see anyone outside Penrith or Melbourne winning the comp. Souths, as we have been for a few years now, close but not quite good enough.

Fark, what a try, 98% of his body over the side-line.

Brett who?

Eels really need to win this one if they are serious this year.
Roosters aren’t down to bare bones but they aren’t far off...and before I finish typing the Roosters are in again.

This is why the Eels aren't serious contenders. They are every bit as big and ugly as the Panthers, but they take forever to score. Nothing like the same movement and understanding. All hammer, no screwdriver.

That's better!

That’s a very moving story Konk - not a close follower of UK League but don’t need to be.
5’4 & 10 stone tells you the ticker on him.
Horrible disease.

Ahhhhhhh shyte, so quick.

One of the reasons I fell in love with League was taking Master Sheen to Harlequins. The kids loved it because they could go on the pitch for a 30 a side game afterwards. The players would cross the pitch for their meal in the sponsors lounge across from the dressing rooms about 30 minutes after full time. While some ignored the kids and walked through the middle of their game (Lee Briers) others stopped to cheer them on. Rob Burrow was always mobbed because kids identified with the tiny bloke in a game full of giants, and he was always delightfully patient and affectionate to them.

We even met his parents in the bar after a game once, and we were chatting to them happily (even shorter than him!) when the man himself turned up and thanked my twins for coming along and asked them how they liked the game and if they played themselves. A lovely, lovely man, I can’t praise him enough. Great stuff from supporters like Kevin Sinfield too, he ran seven marathons in seven days to raise 30 grand and brought in £2m.

Another great round of games, some blow-outs, some last minute winners, plenty of skill and guts on show...and watching these giants run around makes what Rob Burrow did in his playing time all the more remarkable.
Lovely article given the heartbreaking subject, I tried to explain to my daughter what it was about but just choked up when I tried to read her “There’s something beautiful,” Rob says, “about being cared for by the only girl you’ve ever loved.”

I know this probably makes me a philistine, and I'm wrong, but if they really are going to make any sort of contact with the head whatsoever an automatic sin binning this wonderful sport is going to become unwatchable. I'm not saying Mark O'Meley deliberately trying to kill blokes is appropriate in 2021, but in a fast contact sport like this you can't reduce all contact with the head to zero.

(Context, currently watching an already dominant Manly team play against an already poor Brisbane team with two in the bin. Six sin binnings in a game and a half.)

Make that 8 sin binnings in two matches. Only RL would choose to bring a sweeping rule change in for the showpiece weekend of the season. Shoots itself in the foot as a sport over and over again.

I get your point, particularly about the timing of the change, but making intent the only criterion for punishment is too lax. We can’t pretend that business as usual hasn’t resulted in terrible damage. I think the administrators are getting squeezed between serious legal peril and falling junior numbers and just have to make the game safer, whatever the impact on the spectacle.

Genuine question, how does boxing and UFC get around this? Both codes of rugby neutralising themselves into a touch rugby situation, while there's literally a sport where two blokes get into a cage and leather the fcking sht out of each other on pay per view.

This morning's games were a farcical nonsense.

Boxing, who are you going to sue? It’s not like there’s a National body that takes all the money and indirectly employs everyone. All the sanctioning bodies are in litigation proof domiciles.

UFC is totally the opposite, but hasn’t been going long enough for problems to emerge. I’ve always thought UFC deserves a big anti cartel suit from the fighters anyway.

Union is ahead of League in disregarding intentions. It’s still too early to say what the game will end up looking like...and whether it leads to fewer problems anyway.

First time I can recall enjoying the Friday Night Super League more than the Friday morning NRL - even though it’s two crap teams and Hicks refereeing.

NRL needs to beware the VAR lessons - you can kill a brilliant product with overkill of something with good intentions.

The problem is once they go down this road, there'll be no turning back.

Another game ruined...Tedesco virtually kneeling when hit high and off goes the Cowboy.
There’s no way that this application of the rules can stick; no one will be left watching.
I understand the concussion issue, short and long term, but if you’re going to really cater for that then this game won’t exist any more. This is making me grumpy.

The game can survive and be healthy. 99999.9% of high shots are accidental. Don't punish mistakes
