Selected 3 times, got off the bench twice. 2 x Foreman, 2 x "Guilty". One case was a copper who was guilty of violence against his ex. He had the bright idea of bringing a group of his mates along to glare at us from the public gallery throughout the trial. Glad to have done my bit to help clean up the streets.

Overall, thought the jury system worked well - a real mixture of people, but all properly committed to coming up with the right answer.

Was chosen once too many decades ago in Oz but the case was dismissed before I could even get to court. Nothing since either in Oz or the UK.

Missus got picked for one at Belmarsh recently and it took a good week or so. They ended up with only 11 on the jury as one fell asleep and was dismissed by the judge.

So, the question is, have any of you fallen asleep while doing jury duty or have any good stories about snoring or sleeping jurors?

Close, but no cigar.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime. (Mark Twain) Find me on twitter @derbyhoop

Another thing that they don't tell you, but which becomes apparent after sitting on a few cases, is that "ordinary" defendents sit it the body of the court, usually at a desk next to their solicitor. But other defendents are sitting at the back behind some kind of barricade, accompanied by a warder or police officer. These are defendents who are either remanded in custody (possibly because they are violent, or a flight risk) or else are already in prison for something else.
We had one case where the guy was being tried for a break-in, and stealing a can of aftershave. The jury thought this was hilarious, but it turned out the guy was already doing time for other crimes, and had violated his parole conditions. They don't tell you this, in case it affects your judgement, but you can tell from where the defendent is sitting.
