I too wouldn't want the game to become more Americanised but maybe the ref should stop his watch for substitutions. All he needs to do is indicate the clock has stopped by raising an arm or maybe getting the nearside linesman to raise his flag indicating the clock has been stopped and then the clock starts again on resumption of play. He could also have this descretion (which I assume he already does anyway) for lengthy injuries. |  |

Better still, have the clock stopped every time the ball is dead, and restart when the game does. Make the game last for 60 minutes of actual playing time rather than 90 minutes with loads of time wasting and arguments over too much or not enough added time. The final whistle can go as soon as the ball is dead after 60 minutes. |  | | |

Will add to the time wasting of course - players shuffling off like they've shat themselves. |

Fear that this would only accelerate Americanisation- how could timewasting be enforced if clock is stopped? Would refs still book for timewasting? If not why wouldn't players take the opportunity to have a drink/discuss the next 'play' with the 'offense' coach? |  | | |

No chance of that speeding up the game!
I had the misfortune to watch this being experimented with in the Isthmian League in the '90's.
Any "kick in" within 70 yards of the goal, you had to weait for all the defenders to reach the penalty area before the ball was launched into "the mixer".
It was awful, but thankfully only lasted a season. | | | |

It depends on how it’s implemented of course but I imagine it could completely change the sport. Just look at the lengths teams go to winning free-kicks. Wouldn’t this just extend to throw ins too? For instance teams taking the ball out wide and kicking it against defenders to win what is essentially a free-kick?
I guess if the rule was kick-ins with no run up it might be ok.

Surely one of the top reasons against a free kick replacing a throw in. An attacker putting or deflecting the ball out of play does not warrant the end of the attack. | | | |

Sorry Paul, what is the 2m distance that is in place for throws? Is that the distance opponents are meant to be away from the throw in taker?
At the time of the '93/'94(?) experiment I think you could theoretically be stood closer than that. I can't remember when you were prohibited from standing up close & personal!

Yes the 2m 'rule' has been in place for about 5 years now.
You can walk back slowly 10 yards as they do now for fks but not 2! 
Whatever happens to the speed of the game it WOULD prevent them becoming defacto free kicks at least. | | | |
