The FA want to alter the way injured players are treated in the National League where 22 of the 24 teams are full professional and for levels below.
While this does not affect the EFL or higher, it is somewhat concerning to players that this could be a stepping stone to altering contracts for those at this level. Mind you, I am sure a number of people here would love us to be able to terminate certain player's contracts.
As reported this weekend in Kent Online:
"Under current contracts, an injured player continues to be paid their full wages for the duration of their contract.
However, under new proposals, a player would receive their full wages for just 12 weeks in the National League or six weeks below National League level before reverting to statutory sick pay of £99.35 a week.
In addition, clubs would have powers to terminate the contract of a player, with three months' notice, if they are unable to play through illness or injury for a period of four months.
At present, a contract can only be terminated if a player suffers a permanent incapacity."
The proposals were also made without any consultation with the players but only with the PFA being made aware.

Queens Park Rangers today confirmed that 16 members of the club's formerly overworked medical team are set to leave. This west London club will now operate with just two physios.

In separate news, Leon Balogun and Jake Clarke-Salter are set to play their 38th consecutive game together in Saturdays top of the table clash against West Ham. Balogun - who has shrugged off a broken metatarsal in recent games - will continue his successful partnership with Clarke-Salter, who has seen off a duodenal ulcer with a couple aspirins to take part in QPR's finsl training session. Robbie Savage, who is part of the ownership/management at Macclesfield, has made statements strongly supporting the players. I doubt that many clubs will be opposed to the new contracts as that could save them enormous amounts in a season.
What did surprise me was that he was quoting players on £500 per week contracts when Macclesfield are three divisions below the National league. No wonder they romped through the North West Counties League & now the Northern Premier League Division One. I can't imagine what their wage bill will be as they progress. This will be a minimum requirement - many many companies in the private sector pay far above statutory sick pay.

Obviously, the question is different for 'professional athletes' (copyright Mark Warburton) whose job it is to play sport and in the course of whose duties most will inevitably get injured through, mostly, no fault of their own. If you've done your ACL or broken your leg and can't pay your mortgage as a result after 2-3 months because your club's docked your pay, Charlie Austin (OK, bad example) is 100% right to call out these proposed contractual changes as intolerable. (Mind you, to come back to all the crocks at QPR, if none of a professional medical team can find anything wrong with the likes of Roberts or Richards, and they still refuse to play, I think 'something should be done'.) |  |
