The rivalry continues. Feel a bit conflicted as I want Chloe Kelly to do well (but not too well) 😉
Both well matched so wouldn’t be surprised if it’s ET and pens again.

I actually think the whole rivalry thing the media have been trying to drum up in the last few days is very boring, predictable and as usual childish. I don't know why they don't just enjoy what is a fantastic ride for the home side without trying to bring up this old bitterness and obsession with England. A media btw that spends the rest of its time doing its absolute best trying to ensure its favoured sports stay more prominent than football in this country and will be back to doing it again next week.

Leave that nonsense to the cricket etc, women's football is played in a much nicer spirit between all the teams and long may it continue. The England coach laughed it off and looked confused when asked about it. Even in the sports where it does exist its pretty one sided, a bit like Brentford with QPR.

There's no rivalry between England and Australia in football, the countries have never actually played anything other than meaningless friendlies, men or women. Football rivalries for England are with European countries, Argentina etc. Or for a proper and fierce local rivalry with a passionately supported adversary Scotland.

I've admired what the Maltildas have done to the point where I backed them at 15/1 a couple of rounds ago. Home advantage, a decent team, lots of "big" countries e.g. Germany, USA were already out. Those odds were far too generous.

Tonight I think will be close. I hope not penalties as it is the absolute worst thing about tournament football. Half of England's Euro winning side (including the captain and Euros top scorer/player of the tournament) are not at this tournament so I actually think they've done very well to get this far. Their best player in this tournament is still suspended also and can only play again if they make the final.

This is the best chance Australia will ever have to win one. The women's game is growing fast as demonstrated by the quality in this tournament and how much harder the supposed weaker countries are to beat. Once the South Americans, Italy and others start taking it more seriously its going to get a whole lot more difficult. Many strong men's nations don't yet have strong women's teams, that will certainly change.

Most of us on here will want an England win and I genuinely think they'd be very hard to stop if they had their best team available. The Matildas are a likeable team also and pretty talented. So I'll enjoy the game and try to ignore the media nonsense.

Agree mate. The main stream media are becoming increasingly ridiculous in this country and I personally am fed up with all the ignorant tossers who know nothing about football jumping on the bandwagon to give us their “expert” opinions.

Haven’t been watching it but I get the vibe that the quality of this tournament has not been particularly good.

Media seem almost compelled to contrive some drama as there’s not a lot to say about the football.

My biggest fear if we win today is they’ll be a totally unjustified clamour for a public holiday should we go onto win the tournament.

This level of sport to me is comparable to the curling at a Winter Olympics. I’d be pleased for them but let’s not get carried away.

There's been some very good quality and some not so good. What cannot be denied is how well the women's game is progressing though and its only going to get better.

Its never going to be as fast etc as the men's but neither is women's athletics, tennis, swimming and most other sports. It doesn't stop them being very popular and watchable to large audiences.

It’s reminded me of a late 80’s / early 90’s men’s World Cup. I haven’t checked but I wouldn’t be surprised if the goals score isn’t dissimilar to Italia 90.

Certainly more entertaining than last season watching our sorry lot!

Looking forward to this morning’s game. Come on England.

Disagree regarding quality but once again, people knocking the Women's side of football.

Anyway, on to todays match. Whether there is rivalry or not, the Aussies have beaten us in Netball, retained the Ashes, so it has to be 3rd time lucky surely.

This would have made for a spectacular final and so its a shame it is the semi final. But my feeling on this one is that we will take it to ET but will win 2-1

I don't fancy our chances if it goes to penalties, the Matilda's looked awesome against France in that shootout.

Also, I do think that with Lauren James available for the final is kind of written in the stars that she will return to score the winner in the final.

Either way, Good luck to the Lionesses - Do us proud.

"my biggest fear"

You hate women's sport that much you are terrified we will get a public holiday if they win?

Why do we have to compare quality with the men so much? Aside from physical aspects, they have goodness knows how many years of professionalism to catch up on.

Do you not enjoy watching Rangers cos we are not as skillful / powerful as Man City?

It's a boring argument. Open your eyes. I really enjoy it, was jumping round the room when Russo scored just as I was when some ÂŁ150m a week player I don't really know or care about did for England's men in the Euros.

I love women's cricket too. Gets better and better.

England looked pretty decent in their own shootout and don't forget the Matildas missed two pens to win it but were let off the hook by France.

As for the ashes, they may have retained but England were the happier side at the end of the series.

I've coached girls football for 20 years.

The level of interest since the Euros win, and perhaps more importantly the level of confidence the girls have when playing in mixed groups, has gone through the roof. It's been a joy to see.

The vast majority of boys I coach now happily play alongside & against girls without raising an eyebrow or making any comment whatsoever.

I don't get anyone carping, I really don't. Did you not enjoy watching Serena Williams or Jessica Ennis Hill cos "they wouldn't beat a bloke?", or "it's like watching men in the 1950s"?

Tough game today - with Kirby, Mead & Williamson, I'd say England all the way - without them it's too close to call.

I don't get why so many people (not just here, you see it all over the place) like to go out of their way to make sure everyone knows just how little interest they have in womens football and womens sport in general.

Feel threatened, for some odd reason, clearly IMO.

Good luck to the Lionesses today, not sure if I'll be able to get the game on at work but will try and sneak peeks when I can.

Quite right!

The football at times has been very good and enjoyable to watch. Been following the women's game since the 2015 WC, and improvements all round is undeniable, as it is pleasing to observe.

I do wonder how some male detractors would react to technically correct and/or derisory comments being levelled at the performances of their young sons or grandsons' teams.

Hoping the Lionessess go all the way and win it. They've provided more glory than Gareth's boys thus far, and good luck to them, and they seem a likeable bunch.

Fact is: some blokes don't have problems with women's football, they have a problem with women! So instead of ventilating such ignorance, they should maybe just shut the fcuk up about it.

The level of interest in Australia is off the scale and will lead to a huge uptake in women's football.

My English son bought tickets for all the Sydney matches. The family are heavily involved with their local club. However, with an Aussie wife and 2 kids , he's prepared to sell 1 adult and 2 children's to any English supporter. I'm not sure if he's selling the tickets or the people.
He's also been checking the wife's marriage vows ahead of today, to see how she promised to behave.

That’s fair enough.

Haven’t watched this tournament but did watch the Euros and agree, the football was very good.

I’m all for girls playing football, so many give up sport around 13-14 and this is such an easy game to get involved. Drop a ball on the ground and you’re up and running. I’m more than happy that the women’s game is evolving so well.

What I was alluding to is probably for another day.

Comparing it to Italia 90 is damning with faint praise seeing as that's the WC still with the lowest goals per game (2.21)

This WC has so far had 2.57 per game.

Slight difference was DS having pulled DB's locks, the latter's 'tap' though daft, resulted in DS going down quicker than the Belgrano and giving the ref little choice.

LJ wasn't as far as I recall, so provoked, but her act was a lot more stupid.
