It was Simon Osborn not Steve Hodge (who was always more of a wide midfielder) who he chose to pick himself over in the relegation season.
I'll just add to the chorus of people who thought he was brilliant for us for four seasons from 90-94 and won't let the disastrous relegation season when he decided he wanted to manage and still play (94-95 he was mostly injured) cloud my memories of him as a player.

maybe, but not as finished as Wilkins was though.
I will never forgive Wilkins for what he did to my club.
Whether or not Wilkins was good before he came back (we can argue about whether Holloway's work rate masked Wilkins lack of movement) he was absolutely selfish in picking himself and it contributed to our relegation. He put self interest before the club. Never to be forgiven.
Besides, you don't have to listen to Wilkins speaking for too long before sussing out that, for all that eloquence, there's not much of a brain there. |

Wilkins was absolutely fantastic for us and loved the club to pieces. Admittedly his accociation with the scum has somewhat darkened the recent memory. Smashing player.

Nobody could understand Wilkin's reluctance to pick Osborn over himself, Osborn was a class act (IMO).

None of which detracts from his importance as a player.
And whisper it: when he was appointed as manager we were in free fall down the table, largely due to the sale of Wilkins and Clive Wilson. He took us back up to mid-table. Different story following season obviously.

wilkin's nickname b4 he came to us was the crab, especially for England when he always seemed to play sideways passes.
By the time he came to us he had matured into a superb midfield general and having him in our team was the envy of many an opposition fan.
can only remember him oozing class in our midfield.
He was player manger under the cut throat Thompson era when the club was being stripped of it's best assets.
Yes as a manger he didnt get it right but I don't blame him entirely for our demise at that time |  |

Wilkins was one of our best midfielders.
I say that on the back of nearly 40 years of attending our games.
The only problem was that he didnt realise when better options were available.
If Francis had remained as manager Osborne would have played instead of Ray.

I don't Know about Granero but I saw Wilkins play many times in the early 90's and he was brilliant.
The best passer I've ever seen in a R's shirt. Simon Barker and Olly were good foils for his game.
He hit that old steward whith the grey hair who used to stand near the goal one warm up. He came over saying sorry and told him 'Thats the best shot I've had all season' class.

Always thought Raymondo was a watered down version of (a fit) Gerry Francis - extended to management also.No bad thing.The holding role in midfield spraying the ball around is so vital and Granero has that ability and vision.Not as good as Don Masson,but that pivotal role doesn't have to be spectacular to succeed.Raymondo was a top man. |  |

This thread is comedy he had numerous England caps and played in a World Cup he was an excellent player for us and his other clubs. One of the few to excel in Italy whilst most other top players that came from here at the time failed there. So you see his ability as a top class football is just completely unquestionable but as a manager he failed however he still would make a great assistant Imo as he is a good motivator especially for the youngsters. |  | | |
