Genuine question-who on earth do we play up front on Saturday? 10:16 - Mar 12 with 5391 viewsjohnhoop

It really is a difficult one isn't it. If Doyle is still injured it makes it very hard to think of even one fit, available option who would be any use at all as a front man.
Austin-injured
Phillips-injured
Doyle-injured
Johnson-presumably injured
Zamora-probably injured and totally unable to run or jump anyway.
Keane-not in any way up to the job from the evidence of last night
Maiga-terminally useless
Is there anybody I haven't thought of ? I don't think we even have a defender/midfielder we can convert as a temporary solution as with Forest and Halford.
So what does everybody reckon is our best option?

Dellatorre.

What a shock that Maiga is useless, I mean who would have thought a player universally accepted as being shitter than George Weahs cousin would turn up on loan at QPR and be crap. I mean I didn't see it coming so I can understand how Redknapp couldn't either.

Maybe we should start with Benayoun up top, he's won the Champions League after all.

play Keane up front again, we moan that young players don't get a chance then write a young player off after one start. People were slating redknapp the other week for taking him off against reading

We've got plenty of midfielders - throw Morrison & Barton / Traore up front. I'm only half joking - this could be our best option if we're going to try to at least score one. Didn't go last night but 5 Live referred to Wil Keane as 'highly rated' - I assume they were referring to his PAYE code.

Shirley we can't do worse than to try Dellatorre up top??
At least he's got 2 working legs at present, unlike 90%-odd of the rest of our striking options

I'm probably being a bit unkind to Keane - I've only seen him against Leeds and he largely went missing, in my view. The thing is, he can't be expected to play up front on his own.

We'd have someone new to moan at if we played him so why not.

I could be wrong but I thought Dave Mc had tweeted that Doyle might be ok for Saturday. If so, I'd go with him.

If not, I'd get Nico on a Grant Holt diet, and then play the big lump up top.

More than likely you stick with Keane, right? Give the boy a chance.

Nico - Assume you mean Nikky Jamjar , well I for one don't think that's a stupid idea but that depends if hes fit enough.

He can hold players off with his physical strength, run with the ball and given the opportunity scored goals. No he wont be competing in the air for loads of balls so we need to play to feet and keep the ball on the deck.

Not sure if anybody else checked out the Reading team from last night, it appeared to me that Adkins went without a recognised striker as I class Drenthe as more of a winger, they took Leeds apart for 60 minutes and that won them the game.

I suggest Harry gets hold of a video of that game because he can learn how to win away from home without a recognised striker, dare I say it there are far better Managers as tacticians in our division.

I think Keane is our only real option. Unfortunately, he is still a young boy, hasn't 'filled out' and isn't really strong enough to handle the loan striker role. He did however show the occasional nice touch and flicked header.

The coaches must work with him on holding the ball and laying it off. The delivery to him needs to be much better,so that it is played to him in a way that makes it difficult for the defender. I.E. to feet, chest, to front so he can head on or occasionally over the top so he can turn and get round the defence. We also need to gamble a bit more and get a midfielder further forward to support and look to get in behind for the through balls.

All basic stuff but practice, practice, practice!

We don't really have a choice!

when Redknapp played without a striker at Watford the reaction on here wasn't to hail him as a tactical genius

Coacheeng? Co-a-cheeng.

Sorry, no idea.

Also anybody that is advocating putting Niko up top wasn't there for Watford.

Austin! Just read on another thread is back in training today.

Even if he is only 1/8th match fit, he's better than all the other losers!

Seriously, get Charlie completely right first. Don't want another Bryan Robson type situation.

Fair point Dave but under the current circumstances we surely have to utilise our resources to pick a team that is most likely to score a goal.

IF Keane is our only striking option for Saturday then I don't see why we have to pick him just because hes young and weve signed him on loan. Hes not our player so were not investing in his future and from what everybody agrees he struggles to play as a lone striker.

PLaying without a recognised striker is not something for the future this is a problem caused by successive Managers not recognising the problem when its staring them in the face, we go back to Harry not seeing that Zamora and Johnson were not going to be fit enough for the season etc.

The fact it didn't work at Watford doesn't mean it should never be tried again and if Reading can manage 4 goals in 60ish minutes without a recognised striker it proves it can work with the right players and they all have to give 100%

Dellatorre had some type of seizure according to Philip Beard last night so he so he's out if the equation. With no target man, how about Hoilett just behind Morisson. I know he's poor but he did improve slightly last night in a more central position.
It's all like for like with Harry and it was evident early on Keane wasn't comfortable in his role.

Wish I could be like David Watts

The only coaches we have at the club are the ones used on the school run.

If at first you dont succeed, pack up and f**k off home.

The question might well have been asked as soon as Austin was injured.

Could we go for the fashionable false nine with Traore, Niko or Hoilett up front? Does anyone know if Dellatore can actually play football?

Put Clint up front , he is due a goal and he would give it everything .

How about a back three Onuoha, Dunne and Hill and seven in midfield: Hoillet, Barton, Jenas, Henry, Morrison, Krancjar, Traore. Henry could sit deep and width from Hoilett and Traore who could regularly swap wings and the other four could rotate between defence and attack.

Only two loans used so on the bench, Murphy, BAE, Sendles-White, O'Neil, Carroll, SWP, Keane. Cover for all positions and a striker for plan B.

Austin-injured
Phillips-injured
Doyle-injured
Johnson- injured
Zamora-had a runout for the EDS this week to no useful effect. Not mentioned in a single tweet after the team announcement
Keane - decent movement and touch but, at the moment, doesn't look like a striker who gets goals.
Maiga - as bad as the West Ham fans said
Dellatorre - 2 run outs for the EDS, Zero goals
Hitchcock - can't get off the bench for Rotherham in L1
Skapetis - gone backwards this season

Keane is the only viable option we've got
