I once had D748 DPR

If you were a Ducati 748 owing QPR fan, it would have been ideal.

In honour of Easter Monday, 1986, my Dad had S60 URS

Left it to me when he died, seems such a faff to get it on a car though, knowing little about these things!

Needs a couple of steps but it's not too tricky (I did it for my mum's new car recently).

You can transfer a number plate online using the Official GOV.UK Keep or Assign Service.

Step 1: Remove the Plate from the Donor Car
• Go to the DVLA service to Take a private number off a vehicle.
• Enter the registration number, the 11-digit document reference from the donor car's V5C logbook, and the registered keeper's postcode.
• Pay the £80 DVLA transfer fee.
• Save the online reference number given upon approval. The donor car will automatically revert to its original or a new registration mark.

Step 2: Assign the Plate to the New Car
• Access the online service to Assign a private number to a vehicle.
• Provide the new vehicle's V5C logbook details and the reference number from Step 1.
• Complete the assignment.

Step 3: Final Requirements
• Physically replace the physical number plates on both cars before driving them.
• Inform your car insurance provider of the change in registration for both vehicles.
• Update any automatic payment accounts (such as Dart Charge or congestion/LEZ charges) with the new details.

That’s made my brain hurt. So glad I don’t drive anymore.

Why did you stop driving?

I was in the cab trade for over thirty years and had a mutually beneficial relationship renting a taxi from an elderly proprietor and his wife but when the 12-year plate expired three years ago they decided to retire. Then my dear old Dad died and I couldn’t face the palaver of effectively starting again (plus, dealing with the solicitors became more or less a full-time job).

The Freedom Pass (long may it continue) has been a lifesaver and means I don’t actually have the need to own a vehicle or drive anymore. There have been pros and cons of course, but on the whole it’s been a great weight off my mind (fuel prices, insurance, PCN’s, traffic jams, 20mph speed limits everywhere, dealing with TfL, the list goes on and on).

I can’t say the ‘letting go’ of a big part of my life was easy at first but over time, and on the whole, I don’t really have too many regrets (plus, new opportunities and interests seem naturally to have evolved).

I still keep the old ‘hippocampus’ going (it’s bigger than average apparently!) by studying maps and ‘calling over’ routes, but using public transport and walking a lot has given me a completely different perspective on this wonderful city of ours.

Sorry about that, a bit of a ramble, but you did ask!

I remember bursting out laughing in the street upon reading the reader's page in a 'Viz' comic back in the day. It went something like:

Dear Sir,

Save money and don't pay £750 for a personalised number plate, by paying £50 to change your name by deed poll.

Yours faithfully

Mr. T388 SPL
