Not fit to host Euro 2012/Panorama tonight 14:52 - May 28 with 2296 viewswaveydave

Tonight:
Chris Rogers presents Euro 2012: Stadiums of Hate
BBC One, Monday, 28 May at 20:30 BST

Panorama spent a month filming at matches in both the joint host nations and witnessed Nazi salutes from the terraces, black players being taunted with monkey chants, rampant anti-Semitism and a vicious assault on a group of Asian students.

I don't think this tournament should be held in Ukraine, its to risky. I've spoken to Polish friends an what they've said is the country is basically a slum apart from the major cities. So much for 'zero tolerance' What do you think?

I found Krakow a fantastic place to visit, but i do remember being told by a friendly barman to avoid a certain area of town because Wisla Krakow were playing at home against a rival and it could get nasty.

It does sound like they could potentially be exposing travelling fans to danger, but i think FIFA proved by awarding the next few world cups to Russia and Quater they don't care as long as the cash hits their bank accounts...

And we're gonna have thousands of tourists wandering aimlessly around Stratford and other parts of east London.

Wonder how many muggings and rapes will get brushed under the carpet by Lord Coe and co

Ridiculous. Just a minority of thick idiots who if had a single brain cell between them would realise that Nazi's invaded and completey destroyed their cities and murdered millions of their men women and children in the process.

How they can embrace and copy signatures of such atrocities defies logic. It's just a small minority of idiots who have hijacked football as their platform to vent their ignorance.

I think that is a bit of a generalisation. I lived in Leyton for a while it is not as salubrious as other parts of London , but being bought up in West London near Ladbroke Grove there are also places round there which are not great despite the Notting Hill types who now populate the area. I always felt safe walking around East London but sometimes a reputation of the area goes before it. East London has a lot of poorer immigrants whilst part of west London has more richer immigrants such as Russians but there are also salubrious parts of East London.

So you're basically saying your suprised FIFA didn't give us the world cup?

I agree though you can make the case for any major city having dodgy bits and i didn't actually have any issues with my visit to Poland and would happily go back.

The thing that people forget is that things do not change over night, however they do change.

I am not living in Krakow anymore, however when I first moved I went to almost every home game. The stadium had a small capacity and the club were dominated by hooligans, or having to appease them. Now there is an almost brand new stadium, with a capcity of 40,000 - the only way the club can now survive is by attracting more fans; these new fans are not hooligans, but families and other professionals. This is happening up and down Poland where there is new stadiums. Likewise, to compete against these clubs with the new stadiums, other clubs are having to do similar ploys to be able to compete financially. The hope is that this will also happen to Ukraine.

Overall, it was a brave decision to allow Poland and Ukraine to host the Euro's, however without this, unfortunately things may have stayed the same. You can't neccesarily just say stop to a hooligan, but it gets to the point, like we are in England, where other football fans say stop and this has a more lasting message.

I wouldnt watch the show. It's a load of BS..specifically with regards to Poland. I live near Wroclaw and not far from Krakow. There will be no issues at all. And Sol is just piping up as they dont like gays here

How many groups of Asians follow England around?

If they do, they would, I'm 99% sure, be protected by the large English presence there anyway.

When these documentaries are made, the team sent to film them should have some savvy about the subject matter, as previously seen with that fukkin idiot Macintyre.

It's the same in Poland as in the Ukraine, so don't think that it isn't.

Oh dear hear we go again, I saw some programme similar to this a few weeks ago about so called Ukranian football thugs, It was poorly made and tbh about as frightening as constipation.
Everytime there is a football tournament you get the same old antiquated quotes from the local police, the local thugs and the local fcking hot dog sellers, all being filmed for the benifit of the producer.

I'm not watching that drivel, I've seen it all before

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Yeah that kind of tells you a lot about the mentality of the fans that they would do that to their own fans. Having watched the programme you can see there is clearly an issue although more so in the Ukraine. Should they give them the tournament then try to use that spotlight to improve fan behavior or withhold major tournaments until they get their act together. Id suggest the latter if it was up to me but UEFA seem to disagree.

Anyone who was passing that documentary off as typical panorama spin/scare mongering/high horsing or whatever...

After watching that, do you still think that's all it is?

Absolutely disgusting. The senior official they interviewed in Ukraine just summed it up. Completely in denial and fully prepared to bullsh*t his way through the questions put to him.
Those asian fans who got attacked will have that with them for the rest of their lives. Sh*t like that just shouldn't be happening any more.

I know what you're getting at but its more sad then shocking.. I wouldn't say I was suprised with the levels of hatred in that documentary. I'm more in line with Sol's comments about it being sickening

Racism is actually very widespead accross Eastern Europe although Poland itself is very much a new generation that's moving forward faster than most considering Krakow is now fairly multicultural. What's important to understand is that much of Eastern Europe is homogeneous due to the events of Stalinism and the years of the Iron Curtain thereafter and still today the governments of those countries often promote very strong nationalist agendas which again lead back to the old Soviet days.

Another factor is that most of Eastern Europe see a lot of migration but very little immigration which in itself leads to a lack of understanding of the world outside of their own home.
