Actually, there may be some logic to the word 'nincompoop'. Samuel Johnson claimed the word was derived from the Latin phrase 'non compos mentis' (not of sound mind), and that it was originally a legal term defence people used to try & get their guy off the hook.
Similarly, 'cut of your jib' is a nautical thingy, the jib of a sailing ship being a triangular sail set between the fore-topmast head and the jib boom (used to extend the length of the bowsprit). Each country had its own style of sail, and thus the nationality of a sailing ship, and a sailor's consequent opinion of it, could be determined from the jib.
