Southampton V Arsenal The Verdict
at 14:14:43

Only saw the second half and have no comment on the match. Only comment I have is the way Long celebrated charging down Ramsay and sending the ball out for a throw in in injury time like he’d hit his hat trick goal. Shows to me the team spirit and competitiveness is there still and, per the article above, the team is very much committed to the manager still. Great tonic to last weekend.

Chelsea "Insider" Reveals Interesting Southampton Broja Transfer news
at 15:42:15

If we could buy him this window for, say, 15 - 20 mn and have a buy back if 40 - 50 then that would be an outstanding deal for us. Alternatively paying up now to guarantee a loan for next next (maybe with similar economics at the end) would also be great business. I read he is a life long Chelsea fan so he will likely want a shot to prove himself there at some point but in terms of Sport Reps business model this sort of deal is not incongruous.

Breaking News ! James Ward Prowse Signs 5 Year Deal
at 21:37:51

I hope this is reflective of the club explaining to JWP their further transfer targets this summer and ambitions thereafter. I could also read into it that we're actually a lot closer to fresh investment than the forum let on and this was able to persuade him to extend his contract further.

Unfortunately it could also be his agent hearing the comments at the forum and holding Saints' feet to fire in light of Villa interest. Knowing Saints would lose future transfer credibility if they accepted an offer for JWP having said the diametrical opposite a few days earlier was probably music to any agent's ears.

I'm a half full type so I hope this bodes well for the remainder of the window and potentially future investment also. I must say though the radio silence on a new Center Half concerns me (as does reports agreements are in place to extend McCarthy and Stephens' contracts).

Ryan Bertrand Turns Down Southampton Contract Offer
at 12:46:19

Not only our best defender but for a few years also one of our best attacking threats when overlapping with Redmond. That element of his game has faded unfortunately and as such I understand the pragmatism of the contract offer. It’s a shame though as he’s a bright guy that started in the lower leagues before Chelsea. Part of me wonders if his expressed desires at the business end have threatened a few people who have comfortable incomes and see a smart ex player taking their role and thus deliberately making things awkward? Hope not but corporate strategy is always self serving. I for one wish him all the success going forward (figuratively and on the pitch too!) - a great servant and as nick says legendary status.

Southampton V Burnley The Verdict
at 13:41:44

From memory we were 2-0 up against man Utd and I was thinking Europe was on the cards. We slumped and lost 3-2 and that was the start of the terrible we’ve endured. Let’s hope doing the opposite yesterday will turn the season back around and we can build momentum up again and start next season the same as this one and keep it going.

Saints At Brighton The Verdict
at 03:27:28

Romeu was great I thought and does so much f the non glamorous work for the team.I thought we looked a little tired at times and disjointed but never like we were in trouble even after their goal. My main criticism is why doesn’t KWP take on his man more? He has bags of pace and ability and Bertrand is alway looking to overlap or take on his man. Vallery was supposed reluctant to do so too - is there something tactically weak that prevents right backs from binning firward? Ings brought a different level threat in the second half and I hope he signs an extension soon

Saints Look To Go Top For The First Time In 32 Years
at 12:15:30

I have a feeling on a more recent trip to Arsenal for the 1230pm kick off game five or six seasons ago we had the chance to go top if we beat them (I think they were top at the time). From memory this was the game where Boruc tired a Cruyff turn in the area, sort of tripped over it and Giroud (I think) picked up the ball and rolled it into the back of the net.

I was only 8 for the time you mention above, but to this day I can remember the South Today report and how I thought we would win the league! A bit like Christmas, it's all about believing...

Comprehensive Victory ! But Caution Still Required !
at 12:26:25

The NBC commentator here made the point that we “bossed the first half against Spurs and an error in injury time led us to unravel in the second” and that we probably should have beaten palace. Football full ifs and buts I guess. This was the first Saints game I’ve been able to watch from start to finish and they seemed so well drilled and deliberate. There appears to be really confidence in the two CBs from Romeu and JWP and vice versa in them, as such they are all making good decisions and never look frazzled when closed down. I though JWP was motm by a distance - he gets a lot of groaning in here for playing the the way he’s facing (often backward) but that is the plan to keep possession and you could hear RH praising him in the sidelines when you switch off the piped in crowd noise so he is clearly performing the planned task.

At he other end of the pitch, Walcott will keep Redmond and Armstrong on their toes - I think he should replace Redmond but I am probably missing something there as he got motm...

Stuart Armstrong Set to Miss Chelsea Game After Positive Covid 19 Test
at 17:41:35

He was negative when he showed up but positive in a second test. Would suggest he got it in Southampton - let's hope we don't have a raft of players unavailable that got it from him and/or gave it to him. Is there a rule for number of covid isolations that lead to a game being postponed -assume there must be something in place?

American Takeover Bid For Saints
at 01:35:33

A flippant comment above, apologies. However RH led saints to an incredible post lockdown performance which surely would have pricked owners’ ears up everywhere especially with saints record of recent managers in MP and RK linked (and in RK’s case getting) some of the top jobs in the world. For him to be in a rich run of results and commit to Saints hopefully means there’s some runway in this.

Spurs Daylight Robbery Offer About To Be Accepted
at 01:40:14

Clearly a red flag that he wouldn’t sign last year so in hindsight should have put him up for sale then. However how much would we have got for him then having just stayed up? I don’t think it would have been much more than 20 mn and with one year left on his contract getting that now would be a reasonable deal imo. The Everton figure I read was 19 mn going up to 25 with certain milestones met - 15 still a long way off though.

When the stories started up I didn’t really think we were losing much and frankly think we’ve played better without him. KWP has grown in confidence, knows and seems to fit RH’s system and would be A welcome addrion. I think we are all a little jaded with Spurs dealings and the tough guy image Levy likes to portray and we might lose out by 5 mn on what we think he’s worth but frankly our reinvestment strategy has been inconsistent at best and poor in defense so all in I think I’ll grin and bear it and hope PEH fails miserably at Tottenham (which is more about Spurs than PEH).

We should, however, report Tottenham for their part in clearly unsettling A player. But with a year on his contract I’m not sure how much more we can expect. Let’s finish above them next season and we can all tweet him non stop about how his ambition is working out for him (sadly he’ll likely just respond with a screenshot of his monthly pay check which is what this really is all about..)

Saints Release 2020/21 Home Kit
at 12:29:18

The Chinese lucky color is red. If you’re ever in Asia over lunar new year holiday period everyone (ex pats included) are donned head to toe in red. Given ownership and wish to get a foothold in Chinese merchandise sales a predominantly red kit makes quite a lot of sense. However, I agree I would much prefer a vertical stripes kit and that should be saints branding/marketing ploy - I am just worried we might be in for period of every other season being red though to gain China following...

Saints V Manchester City The Verdict
at 00:35:19

The defense played very well and McCarthy made some great (and one lucky) saves. I would also add Danny Ings was our best defender - the commentators here pointed out he was everywhere on the pitch and made some desperate sliding blocks and just looked so happy throughout. Someone on here pointed out that Leicester players in their title season all take about 90 seconds after the final whistle to get up and do handshakes. I feel like post lockdown there isn’t a player on our team that has left a single bit of effort on the table.

Can Kyle Walker - Peters Be The Answer For Saints ?
at 13:24:53

I think both prices are inflated for the sake of negotiation. PEH with one year on his contract is not IMO worth 35mn especially as it’s uncertain how much cash any team will have to spend on transfers. I think 25 mn for PEH sounds more than reasonable and say 5 for KWP. So KWP plus 20mn for PEH sounds good and both clubs (well Levy) can crow about how they held out for the bigger numbers for each player... levy can even claim to have gotten 25 mn for peters it will just mean he dropped 45 on PEH

Saints V Arsenal The Verdict
at 12:47:56

I broadly agree with your observations. PEH is going through the motions right now and I would drop him to see who can fill his shoes (I am in the camp that said shoes aren’t that big in the first place). Most puzzling to me though is why when two up against a Norwich side that looked like they couldn’t wait for the final whistle Che Adams wasn’t given a 30 minute run out to get that much needed first goal. RH blocked his sale in January so clearly likes him but as a former striker himself surely he knows more than anyone what Adams needs? I though obamfemi was poor and too often got in Ings way or didn’t draw defenders always from him, Long did much better and Adams also has much better positional awareness.

I’m not sure what happened to Vallery but he has nothing going forward refusing to take on his man or even run into space and couldn’t even trap the ball or bother chasing to keep it in play at one point. This led to KWP looking like Roberto Carlos in comparison so I take his performance with a pinch of salt but if he gets a run and does well I’d like to see him part of a swap for PEH as our recent defensive buys have been much lacking.

Finally, having played the unusual combination of both midfield and goalkeeper until I moved abroad 20 years ago I do have sympathy for McCarthy. The first goal was totally on him making a poor decision. The second was a a second attempt through a crowd of players which are very difficult to deal with no matter how good you are - you can’t commit until very late as any flick or deflection and you look stupid. He pushed it to the side which he should have done and there wasn’t a single defender that went toward the goal to block the shot. Goalkeepers union rant over but from my perspective he’s the best keeper we’ve got and it would be a lot of money to upgrade him - let’s hope Gunn develops well and puts him under pressure and he gets a decent center half in front of him too next year.
