A small refereeing question. First half there Mitrovic got taken out, ball fell to Targett, referee played advantage, but it wasn’t much of an advantage because Mitrovic wasn’t in the box to cross it to. Could Targett ‘refuse’ the advantage? Either just leave the ball or stop and tell the ref he wants the free kick? We suspect not but we did wonder. |  | | |  |

Surely it is up to the referee to decide if the side have gained an advantage by not giving the free kock?
In this instance it certainly wasn't an advantage to Fulham. Far too often a referee claims that he is playing an advantage just before the team has retained pocession, but are often in a far worse position than they would be if the free kick had been awarded. |  | | |

They can and sometimes do bring the ball back and award the free kick afterwards.It should be up to the team awarded the free kick to decide whether they should continue or not. |  | | |

Need to take a leaf out of Rugby's rule book with advantage (and many other areas) imo.
Ref plays advantage and the "advantaged" team loose possession 10 seconds later but play continues with no advantage gained. |  | | |

What referees 'should' do is only signal advantage once they have decided there is one.
If not sure, you wait and see. So in theory at least, once referee has signalled advantage its too late for player to say no thanks.
The cynic in me, says it would be very difficult to leave the call to players for two big reasons
1) The inherent 'bias' - loads of times I've seen referees and myself blow for a foul, the defenders stop and THEN attacker moans about wanting the advantage - it only appears an advantage because everyone else has stopped playing!
2) Lack of law knowledge - many don't realise that its only an advantage if an opportunity doesn't present itself, NOT if 'wasted' by the attacker. EG Defender tackles soon after a foul - advantage. Attacker misplaces pass - advantage lost - you don't get two goes, its either a foul or advantage.
