Good point Digs. My son said the same in the world cup. Even the best keepers come for a cross to punch not take it. Must be a coaching thing: playing percentages or something.

Any coaches on here know what's going on?

Might have something to do with ball technology. Ball moves in the air more hence safer to punch or parry.
